OBERLIN — An accident north of Jennings in Decatur County last Thursday evening claimed the life of a 54-year-old Jennings man. It was one of three fatal accidents reported Wednesday and Thursday in northwest Kansas, according the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office. The accident occurred at 7:15 p.m. The victim was identified as Robert Papp, 54, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe north a quarter mile north of Jennings, when he lost control. The Tahoe rolled several times, and Mr. Papp was ejected. Troopers said he was not wearing the seat belt. The car came to rest in the middle of the road, facing east. (The Oberlin Herald)

Kansas man killed in rollover crash after losing control of SUV

JENNINGS, Kan. (KAKE) - The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 54-year-old man was killed when he lost control of his SUV and crashed in Decatur County. The accident happened at around 7:15 p.m. Thursday on 2400 Road just north of Jennings. The patrol said Robert Papp was heading north when his Chevy Tahoe rolled several times. Papp was ejected and died at the scene.

KDOT approved August bids

The Kansas Department of Transportation announced this week the approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects. The letting took place Aug. 18, in Topeka. Some of the bids may include multiple projects that have been bundled based on proximity and type of work. District Two — North Central.

Francis W. Porsch

Francis W. Porsch, 88, of Selden, died Monday, August 16, 2021. He was born Dec. 2, 1932, to Walter and Thresia (Koerperich) Porsch at their rural home in Decatur County, KS. The family later moved to a farm east of Selden in Sheridan County, KS. He attended Cresco country school and graduated from Selden High School. He later joined the U. S. Army and was stationed in California.

Road construction projects slated in Rawlins, Decatur counties

A trio of road construction projects in Rawlins and Decatur counties is expected to begin over the next few weeks. All three are Kansas Department of Transportation projects. The first project will start the week of May 24 on K-117 in Rawlins County. Work will consist of a 1-inch mill and 2-inch overlay on approximately 12 miles, starting at the U.S. 36 junction and ending at the Nebraska state line.

K-383 resurfacing project to start in Decatur County

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a resurfacing project on approximately 7.5 miles of K-383 in Decatur County on Monday. Project work will consist of a 2-inch mill and inlay beginning near the south city limits of Jennings and ending at the Norton County line. Traffic will be directed through the work zone by flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours, and minor delays should be expected.

Pursuit from Shelby to Decatur County ends with 4 arrests, guns found

An attempted traffic stop turned into multiple arrests Friday. Just after 11:00 pm the Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop a Volkswagen for improper display of license plate. The driver failed to pull over and led a pursuit from the 109 mile marker of I-74 into Decatur County. The driver fled the car after it was brought to a stop with a tire deflation device.
