A New Bedford man was arrested on June 22, 2022 on drug distribution charges involving fentanyl. Hector Diaz, 44, was indicted on two counts of distribution of and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. Diaz was released on conditions following an initial appearance yesterday before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Judith G. Dein.

MIDDLEBORO – Police moved an injured bear from the median of Interstate 495 in Middleboro early Thursday afternoon after the animal was hit by a car.  The bear will be euthanized after a medical evaluation conducted by wildlife experts determined it sustained significant injuries and couldn't be relocated. Massachusetts State Police and Environmental Police were in the area for more than an hour monitoring the bear's movements in the woods between the north and southbound lanes of 495 near Route 24 in Middleboro.SkyEye video captured the bear attempting to hobble out of the woods before police arrived. The bear was struggling with an apparent injury to its back leg.  After briefly moving toward the highway, the bear limped back into the woods.Troopers shut down traffic in both directions periodically while trying to get the bear to come out.Around 12:30 p.m., Environmental Police were able to sedate the bear, load it into the back of a pickup truck and drive it away safely.

DIGHTON — Chief Christopher Maguy reports that the Dighton Fire Department battled a trailer fire outside a home on Friday afternoon. Dighton firefighters responded to 3025 Elm Street at 4:21 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about a trailer parked on the property, about 200 feet off the road, was fully ablaze.

BUZZARDS BAY – Three public beaches in Bourne failed water quality testing during the first week of that program carried out by the Barnstable County Health and Environment Department. NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford police say a city man has been arrested after he allegedly crashed a dirt bike into a car while carrying four bags of marijuana. Just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday, police officers responded to a reported vehicle and motorcycle crash at Grove and Cottage streets.

MASHPEE – No injuries were reported after a front end loader reportedly overturned at a job site in Mashpee. It happened about 4 PM off Nathan Ellis Highway (Route 151) at a job site by Andy’s Market. Firefighters mitigated a fluid spill. The incident is under investigation. PLYMOUTH, Mass. — A “road rage yelling match” turned violent after a Plymouth man allegedly smashed a teen’s head into a steering wheel on Wednesday, authorities say. Daniel Kenney, 49, of Plymouth was arrested for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a steering wheel) and assault and battery according to the Plymouth Police Department.

Prosecutors said the suspects used fraudulent licenses and credit cards to make various purchases and rent vehicles and hotel rooms.

PROVIDENCE — Mayor Jorge Elorza on Friday signed the final city budget of his term at a time when home values will mean higher taxes for residents. The $568-million budget for fiscal year 2023 slashes the residential tax rate to $17.80 per $1,000 of assessed value, and the commercial rate to $35.40 per $1,000.
