Free food is now available in a South Dallas food desert. On a recent balmy Saturday afternoon, half a dozen people gathered on the corner of Second Avenue and Scyene Road, a few blocks south of the South Dallas Cultural Center and Fair Park. They were there to set up the second of two free food pantries in the area.

Preston Hollow has been one of Dallas’s ascendant neighborhoods for awhile, but even some of the homes there feature extra perks. One of them is 11041 Lawnhaven Road. Marco’s Pizza, a nationwide pizza chain with many locations in Denton County, will open a new shop soon in Flower Mound. The future Flower Mound Marco’s, 4351 Cross Timbers Road, will be located in the Tom Thumb shopping center just west of Bridlewood Boulevard, the town of Flower Mound said in a news release on Sunday. It will offer pre-built pizzas, subs, specialty items and more.

It’s eight o'clock in the morning in Frisco and Detour Doughnuts and Coffee just opened. Entering the store plays with your senses from the strong aroma of fresh coffee followed by sights of intricately decorated doughnuts laid out in the display case. Sounds of mellow hip-hop music can be heard along with a “good morning” from the welcoming staff. One bite of their Melona Mint doughnut completes the sensory experience; its pillowy bite and an unlikely combination of smooth honeydew and fresh mint delight the taste buds.
Palmer’s Hot Chicken – the beloved Nashville hot chicken concept with a location in East Dallas’ historic Hillside Village shopping center will open their second location in Preston Hollow this winter at 12300 Inwood Rd #130, Dallas, TX 75244. The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner as well as curbside pick-up and delivery on most major third-party delivery apps.
The coffee bar at Jane is now open daily in Southlake with full wine and cocktail service to come near the end of August. The gathering space began a soft opening in July at 1151 E. Southlake Blvd., Ste. 390, and is offering wine and cocktails Wednesday through Saturday evenings. The American government hordes cheese. It’s an odd deal you may want to investigate, but there are actual stores of processed American cheese, not too unlike Velveeta, in giant government warehouses on the ready to distribute to disaster victims, food banks and welfare recipients. Other governments have been offered this cheese and refused. Ronald Reagan loved the program, with piles equivalent to two pounds per person. But what can be done with this cheese? Why not make queso?

On Friday evening the Dallas County Public Health Committee unanimously voted to raise the COVID threat level from yellow (low) to orange (moderate) for unvaccinated people. Last week, UTSouthwestern updated COVID case projections; hospitalizations have increased by 67% in the past two weeks, and if the trend continues the county could see 400-500 concurrent hospitalized cases by Aug. 9. The report warns of “levels of hospitalization by October that approach those seen in the surge in the first months of this year and substantially higher than those during the surge last summer.”
