Dan Quinn is the key to Mike McCarthy’s future with the Cowboys

Mike McCarthy’s debut season with the Dallas Cowboys was bitterly disappointing. Of course the multiple injuries, particularly to offensive starters, was major, but second to that was the frequently putrid performance of the defense. It led to the decision to not keep Mike Nolan. He may have been a bit of a scapegoat, but there is little disagreement about him failing in multiple ways. Now Dan Quinn has been brought in as the new defensive coordinator. His success or failure will not only be a big factor in the success of the team this year, it will be the primary determinant of how long McCarthy hangs onto his own job.

Dak Prescott: These three Cowboys are 'most important, if you ask me'

FRISCO, Texas -- At the four practices open to the media during the Dallas Cowboys' organized team activities and minicamp, all eyes were on quarterback Dak Prescott. And for good reason. The last time he was on a football field, his right leg was in an air cast because of a compound fracture and dislocation of his ankle. He had two surgeries. His rehab was intense, but what he did in spring practices would carry weight, especially after signing a four-year, $160 million extension this past March. There was nothing spotted in Prescott's performance that would suggest the ankle will be an issue when the season starts.

Free agent Geno Atkins comes up again as a fit for the Dallas Cowboys defense

It’s a time-honored tradition. A player who might be on the move in the NFL has his name connected to the Dallas Cowboys. It’s a sure-fire way to get some notice for a media report. It can be easily dismissed, but sometimes there is some real “truth” to the connection. Either from behind-the-scenes sources confirming the interest, or just because it makes sense for the Cowboys to add such a player, the story shouldn’t be dismissed totally.
