POCAHONTAS, Iowa (KCAU) – An Iowa woman has been charged with more than 30 counts of animal neglect after a cat rescue. On June 22, law enforcement officers were called to 204 Walnut Street in Rolfe, Iowa, for a report of domestic assault, according to the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office. However, when they arrived, there was no assault incident. Officers did notice a large number of cats inside the home living in dirty conditions.

FORT MADISON — A man sent to prison for his involvement in a 1969 crime spree in northern Iowa has died in the Iowa State Penitentiary. According to Iowa court records, Elvin Gilroy was one of four men who broke out of a jail in St. Cloud, Minnesota in June of 1969. They stole a county car, ditched that vehicle and stole another car. They made their way south and robbed a grocery store in Spirit Lake, a filling station in Emmetsburg and the Fareway Store in Algona. Melvin Bay, the store manager in Algona, was shot during the robbery. He died ten days later.

The Pocahontas Police Department, Moffitt Animal Shelter, Animal Rescue League of Iowa, Animal Rescue of Carroll, and Dallas County Sheriff's Office helped the county sheriff in this case.

A Rolfe woman, who left several cats and kittens in unsanitary conditions, has been charged with 34 counts of Animal Neglect. According to the Pocahontas County Sheriff's Office, late in the afternoon on June 22nd, law enforcement was called to the residence at 204 Walnut Street in Rolfe. Approximately 30 cats and kittens were discovered without food and water in the vacated house. Law enforcement was advised that 51-year-old Jennifer Sproston had been bringing the cats to the residence and keeping them there.

A Carroll man was taken into custody on a Calhoun County warrant for sexual abuse yesterday (Thursday). According to authorities, 53-year-old Michael Boren was arrested in the 100 block of 6th street at approximately 5:00 p.m. Thursday. Boren was later turned over to the Calhoun County Sheriffs’ office. Boren’s charges stem from an incident in the 2000 block of Whistle Pig Lane in Manson. Boren is charged with incest, a class D felony, and second-degree sexual abuse, a class B felony. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation filed charges in the case.
