LISD to offer free lunch to all students in 2021-22

Students attending Liberty ISD during the 2021-22 school year will not be charged for lunches this year, as the district has adopted a policy that will off healthy meals each day to all students at no cost. During most school years, eligibility to take part in this program is generated by income eligibility guidelines.

Hardin Senior Citizens are back

Great news for Seniors living in the Hardin area; after closing the doors a year and a half ago due to the COVID19 pandemic, the Hardin Senior Citizens are reopening their doors at the Hardin Community Center this coming Tuesday, Aug. 3, and they will be serving lunch at 11:30 am. Lunch plates are supplied by Simply Country Café in Moss Hill and cost only $3 apiece.

Many children can enjoy their summer vacation by attending camps, participating in sports, or having a summer job, but there are many children in foster care who do not get the chance to experience these sorts of summertime activities.Removed from home and placed in the child welfare system because their family is in crisis, these children are already facing trauma that no child should experience – yet on top of all of that, their participation in normal childhood activities with their peers often becomes an afterthought.

Inaugural Salt Bayou Shootout aims to support Future Outdoorsmen of Southeast Texas

Nearly 200 shooters pulled together on a sunny and warm Saturday for the first of what they hope will become an annual event to support Southeast Texas youth. The inaugural Salt Bayou Shootout, which took place at The Lodge at Pipkin Ranch off Big Hill Road in south Jefferson County, gave participants a chance to raise funds for Future Outdoorsmen of Southeast Texas.

Dayton Historical Society will Meet July 26

The next Dayton Historical Society meeting will take place Monday evening July 26, 6:00 p.m., at Parker Hall which is located behind The Old School Museum at 111 W. Houston Street. The program will spotlight the founding of the Dayton ISD Sports Hall of Fame, give information about several of its talented inductees, and talk about the Hall of Fame Museum that displays sports memorabilia from 1917 to the present.

Community says Goodbye to Lewis Spearman

CROSBY – Two memorial services last week marked the community’s sense of loss at the unexpected death of Lewis Spearman. Last Tuesday evening, the community came together for a memorial service in honor of Lewis Spearman, held at Crosby Church. Scores of friends came to pay their last respects, and to share some remembrances. And on Saturday, a large crowd gathered at the Crosby Fairgrounds for a benefit and reminiscences.

Moth Night Out event at Trinity River Refuge

Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting its Annual Moth Night Out Event, Friday evening on July 23 as part of National Moth Week events occurring across the country. Interested folks will meet at the Refuge Headquarters building at 9:00 pm to see and photograph some of the over 950 species of moths documented around the building’s security lights. Black lights and mercury vapor lights will also be used.

Three Fourth of July celebrations planned this weekend in Liberty County

The birth of the United States’ founding will be celebrated this weekend with a bang in Liberty County with three fireworks shows being planned. The City of Liberty will kick things off first on Saturday, July 3, with a fireworks show that will begin around 9:30 p.m. and is centered around the 129-acre Liberty Municipal Park, 501 R.E. Vinson St., Liberty. In years past, these events have included free family-friendly games and live music, but the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the plans to only include the fireworks show.
