Franklinville Woman Pleads Guilty to Federal Methamphetamine Charge

A Cattaraugus County woman has pleaded guilty to a federal drug charge stemming from a traffic stop that took place in Salamanca in January. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Buffalo announced Monday that 35-year-old Heidi Jankowiak of Franklinville entered her plea to one count of possessing with intent to distribute five grams or more of methamphetamine. An investigation by the DEA and the Salamanca Police Department found that Jankowiak was a passenger in a vehicle that got pulled over for an obstructed license plate and failure to use its turn signal on January 23rd. Officers believed the driver was impaired by drugs, and the driver advised them that there was methamphetamine inside the vehicle. Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and recovered a purse belonging to Jankowiak. A digital scale, two suboxone strips, two hypodermic needles, a large quantity of meth, and cocaine were found inside the purse. Jankowiak faces 5-40 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for October.

Cattaraugus County Reports One New COVID-19 Case and Three Remaining Active Cases

The Cattaraugus County Health Department on Wednesday reported one new confirmed COVID-19 case, which brings the county's total case number to 5,721 since the start of the pandemic. The latest case is located in the southwest part of the county. Meanwhile, the number of active cases of the virus in the county is three, a decrease of four from Tuesday. Also, the number of virus-related hospitalizations is down to one, and the county's seven-day average infection rate is unchanged at 0.2%.
