Victim of Brookings stabbing dies at OHSU in Portland

BROOKINGS, Ore. — A 42-year-old Brookings man who was stabbed in the neck by his neighbor on Sunday has died in the hospital, according to the Curry County Sheriff's Office. Dispatch received a 911 call about the stabbing at 7:15 p.m. on Sunday. The caller, Jennifer Lee, reported that her boyfriend had been stabbed in the neck.

Oregon's takeover of public health in Curry County completes July 1

GOLD BEACH, Ore. — At the end of June, the responsibility for public health services in Curry County will be in the hands of state health officials. The transfer of public health from the County to the state began in May, after the board of commissioners approved the measure in an April meeting. Officials cited Curry County Public Health's critically short staffing and limited funds even as the department supervised the local COVID-19 response.

Update: Brookings man arrested in stabbing, victim passes away

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office was notified this morning that Christopher Phillips passed away at 12:05am due to complications related to the injuries he sustained from stab wounds on Sunday June 13th, 2021. Phillips had been treated both at the Brookings Emergency Room, then Sutter Coast Hospital. prior to being flown to OHSU in Portland on Wednesday June 15th, 2021.

Wants to fight the case and taken before justice of peace in Curry County. COQUILLE — Deputy Game Warden McDaniel arrived in Coquille from a trip through Curry county and appeared before the grand jury to give some evidence regarding game law violations. Mr. McDaniel says that Roy Kieling, who was arrested at Powers with F. Hyde for killing dear out of season, did not gain much by fighting the case. Hyde pleaded guilty before Justice Zimmerman at Powers and was fined $50 and costs but Kieling insisted on fighting the case and was taken before Justice A. Adolpsen of Denmark. He was found guilty and fined $50. Kieling refused to pay the fine so was taken by Deputy Warden John Adams to Gold Beach where he must stay for 25 days in jail to serve out the fine.

County, OHA to complete hand-off of public health services

Curry County is expected to transfer the remainder of its public health services to the Oregon Health Authority on July 1, according to a June 17 press release from OHA. The state assumed some statutorily required public health responsibilities as of May 2, after the county decided to hand over public health back in April. Brookings resident Barbara Wieneke passed away June 7, 2021 at the amazing age of 100 years. She was born April 10, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey to Adolph and Sophia (Ellinger) Hartung. Barbara married April 17, 1941 in Michigan to John R. Wieneke who preceded her in death. They had two children.

Fire restrictions in effect on BLM lands in Coos Bay District

As the weather warms and fire danger increases, Bureau of Land Management Coos Bay District officials are implementing public use restrictions on BLM-managed lands on the southern Oregon coast. Starting June 11 at 12:01 a.m., certain activities on BLM-managed lands in Coos, Douglas, and Curry Counties will be restricted to prevent human-caused fire and reduce wildfire potential.
