Planned Water Outage for Portion of Paintsville on Thursday

Due to construction activity, water service will be interrupted for the Starfire Hill area in Paintsville beginning about 6:00 am, Thursday, June 30, 2022. This will affect customers from Jones & Preston Funeral Home to the top of Starfire Hill, including all side streets in between. This will affect Pointview, Pineview and Forest Park Lane. Service is expected to be restored by 9:00 am, Thursday. A boil water advisory will be in effect when service is restored.

Johnson County Fiscal Court is hosting, in coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District,an informational in-person and virtual public meeting on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at 6:30 p.m. (EDT) for the Section 202 City of Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky Flood Risk Management Project. USACE has developed an Engineering Document Report (EDR) to supplement the approved Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed flood risk management improvements for the City of Paintsville and Johnson County, Kentucky. The EDR includes design revisions to the authorized DPR Recommended Plan and provides an integrated Supplemental Environmental Analysis (SEA), which describes the potential environmental effects resulting from the proposed changes. The EDR with integrated SEA can be viewed by visitinghttps://go.usa.gov/xJFqW.During the meeting,USACE will provide a project update and presentation on the proposed supplement to the DPR Recommended Plan as described in the EDR. USACE will also explain the potential impacts as documented in the SEA and facilitate public comments on the proposed action.Louisville District staff will also be available to answer any questions about the project following the presentation.Public input is critical for this process.

The Olive Hill Chamber of Commerce had a busy weekend, with five ribbon cuttings for three new businesses and two new amenities for recreational cyclists and other visitors. The Olive Hill Trail Town bike repair station was funded with donations from a Carter County Community Fund Grant and Carter County Tourism, with Tourism also contributing to the new visitor’s kiosk.

Engelbrecht carries lessons from MSU into OB-GYN Residency

As Allison Fletcher Engelbrecht (Class of 2018) begins her 4-year residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia, she said the lessons she learned at MSU stick with her. Engelbrecht’s father, Richard Fletcher (Class of 1992), MSU deputy director of athletics, and mother, Dr. Wendy Fletcher (Class of 1994), are both alumni, and her sister, Reagan Fletcher, will begin her junior year in the fall. She added five of her father’s siblings also attended MSU, making it a family tradition. Engelbrecht was selected for the George M. Luckey Jr. Academic Honors program, which included a full undergraduate scholarship.

Olive Hill City Council entered into the first reading of a new city occupational tax ordinance in their regular meeting last week. That ordinance would set a two percent tax on, “all employees, whether or not residents of the City of Olive Hill, for the privilege of engaging in occupations… businesses or other undertakings for compensation within the city.” The new tax would be, “equal to 2% of the taxable gross salaries, wages, commissions, and other compensations earned by employees for work done or services performed within the city.”

Final plea in meth conspiracy

The final defendant in a federal methamphetamine conspiracy case has entered a guilty plea. According to reports, on June 17, 38 year-old Ned Davis of Paintsville, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense. Davon Blackford, 41, of Lexington and Megan Stacy, 28 Swamp Branch have also pleaded guily to the same charge. Between March 2021 and Dec. 3, Ned Davis developed a relationship with a methamphetamine supplier and obtained 500 grams or more of the drug and distributed throughout the Johnson Co area.

East Carter students announced as Craft Academy Class of 2024

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics at Morehead State University is proud to announce the members of the Class of 2024. Seventy-four students from across the Commonwealth were chosen to attend the Craft Academy, located on the campus of Morehead State University. Two of those students, Jennifer Nguyen and Mary Sherrard, both of Grayson, are students of East Carter High School. The students live in Craft Academy residence halls and earn dual credit as they complete their final two years of high school at the Academy while also taking college-level courses.

Christmas for kids charity shoots hole in one

The Paintsville Golf Course alongside the Christmas for Kids of Kentucky charity, hosted the first Paul Greiner Memorial Scramble this past Saturday, June 25. According to organizers of the event, they hosted approximately 80 golfers, who all participated in donating, along with many businesses that sponsored the event, with many friends and family members who chipped in with support, all of which will be applied to the charity’s Chrisitmas for Kids event set for Dec. 10.
