Bill Berry: DNR scrutiny needed for giant Crawford County pig operation

STEVENS POINT – The Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources mission statement begins with these words: “To protect and enhance our natural resources.”. The DNR has a chance to do just that in the matter of a huge industrial hog operation proposed for Crawford County in the Driftless Region of southwest Wisconsin. It can so by requiring an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the facility, as hundreds of citizens and dozens of organizations — including the Wisconsin Farmers Union and four of its local chapters — have requested.

Death of a family friend on Oak Grove Ridge

The bachelor brothers, Joe and Bill Bernier, lived down the road from the Scheckel farm out on Oak Grove Ridge, a tad north of Seneca, Wisconsin, in the heart of Crawford County. Joe and Bill often came up to our house, about a quarter mile away, to play cards with Dad and Mom in the late 1940s and early 1950s, especially in the wintertime.

Pig farm needs more further review -- Edie Ehlert

An environmental impact statement is needed for the proposed Roth Feeder Pig II concentrated animal feeding operation in Crawford County. The draft permit reads, “the clay rich soils at the ground surface limit the amount of water entering the soil and rock” and “The soil borings at the site show the facility is proposed to be located in an area of clay rich soils. These soils will limit infiltration of surface water (rain, snow, manure spillage) into the subsurface.”

Deborah Buffton: DNR must examine impact of proposed CAFO expansion

I oppose the proposed expansion of the Roth Feeder Pig II project, a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) in Crawford County. CAFOs are becoming more and more common throughout our region, to the detriment of the health and safety of human, animal, and plant life. They simply create profits for the large businesses that run them, at the expense of small family farms.
