ELWOOD — An Elwood man allegedly discharged a gun and injured deputies with a knife while he was being arrested at his Plum Creek Canyon residence. Jeremy Bendler, 36, has been charged with assault of an officer, a Class 2 felony, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, Class 2 felony and a second subsequent offense of resisting arrest, a Class 3A felony.

In 2015, the dream for John and Melissa Bell of owning an old house came true when the couple purchased their home on Lake Avenue on the west side of Ehmen Park. The home was built around 1907 by E.A. Calling on land originally owned by Gothenburg Light and Power Company. Calling was one of Gothenburg’s founders, and a cattle buyer as well as businessman. Today the home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and according to a 1985 newspaper article was the first and only residence in Gothenburg to receive that designation.
