Man set on fire in River North

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A man was set on fire in River North early Wednesday morning. According to police, the 75-year-old man was laying on the ground, in the 400 block of North Wabash Avenue  just before 3 a.m., when another man approached. The offender poured a flammable liquid on him before setting him on fire and running off.Police said a security officer at a building nearby jumped into action and used a fire extinguisher to get the fire out.The 75-year-old man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.No arrests have been made.

Toddler dead in Roseland apartment fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A toddler is dead after a fire Wednesday morning in an apartment building in the Roseland neighborhood.Chicago firefighters responded to the fire in a courtyard apartment building at 11035 S. King Dr.According to the Chicago Fire Department, there were heavy flames upon arrival. A 2- to 3-year-old girl was found unresponsive after an extensive search of the building, and attempts to resuscitate the child failed, according to the Fire Department.Further information was not immediately available.

Chicago man charged with stealing vehicle, gun possession in Villa Park; 1 suspect remains loose

CHICAGO (CBS) – A Chicago man is charged in connection to a stolen vehicle in Villa Park on Tuesday. Around 9:50 p.m., Elmhurst police assisted Villa Park police that was in pursuit of a white BMW sedan that was reported stolen. The vehicle traveling east on North Avenue before heading eastbound on I-290, police said. The vehicle was disabled on I-290, east of Vallette Street near the Elmhurst and Village of Berkley border.  The driver, described as a black male wearing a green hooded sweatshirt, ran from the vehicle. The passenger, a 25-year-old Chicago man, was taken into custody at the scene. Three firearms were located inside the stolen vehicle, according to police.  The driver of the vehicle remains loose following several mutually aided searches in the areas of southeast Elmhurst and southwest Berkely.  The passenger of the vehicle was charged by Villa Park Police with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and unlawful use or possession of weapons by a convicted felon. The investigation to identify the driver of the vehicle remains ongoing.   Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Elmhurst Police Department at 630-530-3050.

Nearly 200 residents displaced after condo building fire in Park Ridge

CHICAGO (CBS)-- A 4-alarm fire in Park Ridge left approximately 200 residents displaced overnight. Around 11 p.m., the Park Ridge Fire Department got call about people trapped on the fourth floor of a condo building.After crews arrived, four people were taken to a local hospital and are expected to recover. A total of five people, including a firefighter, were injured in the fire. The Red Cross said they are proving services for approximately 200 people. "We acted fast, we ran out, resident Jennifer Sadlowski said. "Everything else can be replaced, but not our lives. I heard the fire alarm go off so my natural instinct was to run, turn off the water, grab my son and wake him."Fire officials described the condo as a "non sprinkler, non standpipe building," which made the fire harder to put out. Firefighters said the flames were most intense on the top floor and crews had to break windows.The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but it is believed to be accidental. The Red Cross is encouraging anyone impacted to call 312-729-6258, to get connected with support.

Disturbing viral video shows United Airlines subsidiary worker, former NFL player brawling

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Disturbing video went viral Monday, showing a worker for a subsidiary of Chicago-based United Airlines brawling with a former NFL player. One video on social media picks up in the middle of the fight. You can see the United worker and a passenger shoving and punching each other at Newark Liberty International Airport. The worker, an employee with United subsidiary United Ground Express, gets knocked to the ground and is covered in blood – and gets up and keeps fighting. TMZ identified the passenger as ex-NFL player Brendan Langley – arrested on assault charges. Langley tweeted Monday that he was only defending himself. A longer video shows Langley apparently throwing the first punches and the employee slapping Langley in the face. That's when Langley throws more punches and knocks the worker to the ground. It remained unclear from the video what started the fight. The United worker has been fired. United released this statement:"United Airlines does not tolerate violence of any kind at our airports or on board our planes and we are working with local authorities in their investigation of this matter. United Ground Express informed us that the employee has been terminated."
