Illinois tornado leaves at least 5 people injured, dozen of homes damaged

At least five people were injured and a dozen homes were damaged in a possible tornado outbreak in Illinois on Sunday, officials said. The tornado touched down shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday near the suburban town of Woodridge, about 30 miles southwest of Chicago, according to the National Weather Service. The storm outbreak traveled east and ended shortly after 1 a.m., the NWS said.

A father-of-two was ambushed by gunmen and fatally shot in Chicago over the weekend, police said. His girlfriend is fighting for her life in hospital. Chicago Police said the man, identified as 24-year-old Gyovanny Arzuaga, and a woman were in the 3200 block of West Division Street in Humboldt Park, when they were accosted by two or three gunmen who opened fire on them.

Boy injured in drive-by shooting, police say

GARY — A 12-year-old boy was walking to his uncle's car when a man drove by and began shooting at his home Saturday afternoon, police said. The boy's uncle put him in the car and flagged down an officer at 3:51 p.m. Saturday near East Ninth Avenue and Taft Street, Gary police Cmdr. Jack Hamady said.

The National Weather Service says a twister caused severe damage to several homes and knocked out power to residents. The areas impacted include Naperville, Darien, Woodridge, and Downers Grove. Woodridge Tornado Videos Show Widespread Destruction to Illinois Town

A strong tornado hit a Chicago suburb on Sunday evening causing severe damage to several homes, power lines and trees in the surrounding areas. The National Weather Service in Chicago confirmed on its Twitter page at around 11:11 p.m. that a tornado had hit the village of Woodridge, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, as it urged anyone "in the path of this storm, take cover now!"

Severe Weather Sweeps Through Region Overnight, Thousands Without Power

Severe weather occurred overnight in the Region with multiple tornado warnings issued across Northwest Indiana. At about 12:30 this morning Monday June 21st, the National Weather Service Chicago on Twitter said they had received reports of fairly substantial damage in South Haven in Porter County. They also said they’ll have preliminary information available this morning and during the morning will be formulating plans for damage survey teams. Overnight NIPSCO was reporting more than 31-thousand outages; crews were working to assess damage, make necessary repairs and restore power as safely and quickly and possible.
