Windom approves body-worn cameras for police

WINDOM — Officers of the Windom Police Department began wearing body cameras Wednesday following unanimous approval of a new policy Tuesday night by the Windom City Council. A public hearing hosted Tuesday night to present the new policy met with no comments, and Windom Police Chief Scott Peterson told council members that he’d heard no verbal or written feedback — positive or negative — from the community. Peterson also referenced a poll posted on the police department’s Facebook page that indicated strong support for the use of body cameras among officers.

Motorcycle driver arrested after ‘low-speed chase’

A routine traffic stop of a motorcycle near Perkins Creek Apartments on June 9 turned out to be anything but routine for Cottonwood County deputies. According to a deputy’s report, there was a signal to the driver to stop, but he refused to pull over. Instead, a rare “low-speed chase” ensued. Eventually, the motorcycle driver tried to get away by laying down the motorcycle near the Community Center and fleeing on foot. However, police arrested the 41-year-old Windom man on charges of third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and driving after cancellation.

Price to increase for Citizen newspapers

For the first time in more than a decade, the price of a Cottonwood County Citizen newspaper will increase. Starting with the July 7 edition, a copy of the Citizen will cost $1.50, rather than $1.25. The price of the Citizen’s sister newspaper, the Mt. Lake-Butterfield Observer/Advocate, will also go from $1.25 to $1.50 on July 7.

Cottonwood County will see change in annual salary increases

Cottonwood County employees will see a change in when annual salary increases take effect, following action at this week's Commissioners meeting. The board approved a memorandum of agreement with three unions and non-union employees. The agreement allows for salary increases to take effect for the first pay period of a new year, even if some of the hours worked fall before the start of the new year. The first county pay period of 2022 is paid on Jan. 7 for work done from Dec. 20, 2021 to Jan. 2, 2022.
