College notes: Grace Vesco earns all-region softball honors

North Canton Hoover graduate Grace Vesco was named Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Year after a standout season with the St. Francis (Pa) softball team. Vesco, who has many relatives, including grandparents, in Tuscarawas County, also was named first-team All-Great Lakes Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Vesco finished with a 22-4 record and two saves with a 1.00 earned run average.

College notes: Sayre named Horizon League Batter of the Week

Wright State's Alec Sayre has been named the Horizon League Batter of the Week, the League office announced on Tuesday afternoon. The former Dover High School baseball standout drove in a team-high 10 RBI as Wright State went on the road last weekend and tallied a four-game sweep at Northern Kentucky in its first Horizon League action in nearly a month. Sayre had at least one hit and one RBI in all four games, including a pair of three-hit games in the first and final games of the weekend, on the way to a .533 average (8-for-15) with a pair of doubles and two home runs while driving in 10 RBI. His 10 RBI over the weekend surpassed his nine total RBI from his first 16 games this season.
