Keeping it in the Family: Sisters Leslie and LeAnn Jones Open Inglewood’s First Wine Bar

Pictured: (L-R) LeAnn and Leslie Jones | Photo credit:Keith Forest Photography. What do you do when you see your hometown change at such a rapid rate before your eyes? Do you decide to move away? Fight back? Or do you decide to positively affect the ever-changing landscape? This stream of questions has become an everyday occurrence for many across the United States who have seen their hometowns subjected to gentrification. With gentrification, we often see displacement, but there are many opportunities for new small businesses to open, often in the food and beverage and hospitality industries.

At CalArts MFA Open Studios, Failure Is an Option

LOS ANGELES — On a breezy spring Sunday a couple of weekends ago, I drove out to the suburbs of Valencia, California, to what someone jokingly — and very much lovingly — referred to as the “glorious ruins” of the California Institute of the Arts, or CalArts for short. I was there for the school’s annual open studio event, showcasing the work of graduating MFA students. Surprisingly enough, I had never been to the CalArts campus before, despite often feeling surrounded by its alumni, sometimes called “The CalArts Mafia,” especially in Los Angeles.

An Interview With New Electric Motorcycle Cannonball Record-Setter Steven Day

On April 18, 2022, the Charging Across America Challenge set off from both the East and West Coasts. Two Energica riders, both alike in dignity (but nowhere near Verona) decided to crisscross the country along the historic Cannonball route. Event organizer and rider Rob Swartz and his EVA EsseEsse 9 would start in New York City and ride to Redondo Beach, California, while rider Steven Day and his EVA Ribelle would do exactly the opposite. If things went according to plan, they’d meet up briefly at a charging stop in the middle. Both riders would complete their journeys on April 22, 2022—Earth Day.

Pressure mounts for LA Rams to sign OBJ, but on who?

The LA Rams have not forgotten about WR Odell Beckham Jr., nor has Odell Beckham Jr. forgotten about the LA Rams. It’s been ‘out there,’ like a cloud bank that is slowly descending upon a valley village after a morning spring rain. It’s been out there, everyone can see it, but nobody has been able to get a handle on it.

Leonardo DiCaprio appears to comfort Camila Morrone on the beach

Perhaps some people don’t enjoy long walks on the beach? Camila Morrone appeared visibly upset while on a sandy stroll in Malibu with boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio over the weekend. Paparazzi snapped away as the makeup-free model, 27, and sunglass-sporting actor, 47, walked side by side along the shore, both barefoot. During what appeared to be a tense discussion with DiCaprio, Morrone was seen making a furrowed facial expression and grand gesture with her hand. The “Wolf of Wall Street” star appeared to listen intently as he kept his gaze toward the ground. During another moment, the two were seen holding hands and staring at...

Sustainable Homes in Santa Clarita Contribute to California’s Goals for 100% Renewable Energy

Currently under development, a net-zero village in Santa Clarita Valley will be made up of fuel-efficient properties powered by renewable energy. While individual sustainable homes are powered by their own solar panels and geothermal energy, renewable fuel sources such as large solar installations and wind farms are also being used to power businesses and homes throughout California. After briefly hitting almost 95% renewable energy last April, the state continues to exceed its green goals by increasingly using renewable and zero carbon sources. According to the California Energy Commission, these currently provide around 60% of the state’s electricity. There are now a number of incentives for local governments and residents to help increase this figure by becoming more energy efficient. These include the Solar Automated Permit Processing platform, a portal that local governments can use to automatically process permit applications for solar panels. This can speed up permit approvals while still ensuring panels are installed without violating local ordinances.
