Woman sues Dollar General for injuries

PINEVILLE — An Oceana woman is suing Dollar General after she was injured while in one of its stores in 2019. Sherry West was at Dollar General on May 2, 2019, which was an extremely windy day, when a sales rack known as a rotator was on the sidewalk out of the store and the rotator fell onto West's car, according to a complaint filed in Wyoming Circuit Court.

Four-day outdoor festival slated for September near Glen Jean

GLEN JEAN, W.Va. (AP) — The permanent home of the National Scout Jamboree will hold a four-day outdoor festival for the public in September. WVVA-TV reports the Adventure On! Freedom Festival will take place Sept. 10 to 13 at the 14,000-acre Summit Bechtel Reserve in southern West Virginia. Among the events will be a free concert featuring the band Lonestar on Sept. 11 for first responders, active duty or retired military and law enforcement officers on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Wandering cows found on railroad tracks on their way back home

BLUEFIELD — Three cows that ventured away from their home and onto railroad tracks Monday evening were on their way back to their owners Tuesday. Mercer County 911 received reports of wandering cows about 7:40 p.m. Monday. They first appeared at East Wayne Street and eventually reached local railroad tracks. Norfolk Southern Railroad halted trains passing through Bluefield until members of the Bluefield Police Department and Bluefield Fire Department managed to herd the three cows into a livestock trailer.

4 die from COVID-19 at WVa assisted living facility

ATHENS, W.Va. (AP) — Four people have died due to COVID-19 at an assisted living facility in Mercer County, West Virginia. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported that 12 of the 14 residents at Rockin’ Chair Residential Care in Lerona tested positive for the coronavirus, according to owner Airwana Arnett. Lerona is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Bluefield.

Girl Scouts to host GIRL Fest at Ace Adventure Resort

OAK HILL, W.Va. (WTAP) - The Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council is set to host its upcoming GIRL Fest June 28 through July 1. Approximately 380 participants from 17 different states will come together at Ace Adventure Resort for a week of rafting, climbing, kayaking, zip lining, racing through mud and more. In addition, the girls will learn about conservation, conduct research and collect data from nature.

Cows block train tracks in Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) — Trains had to be stopped along a stretch in southern West Virginia as authorities tried to coax three cows off of railroad tracks. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports the cows appeared on the tracks in the city of Bluefield on Monday evening. Witness Angie Sharp said the cows came from a wooded area and made their way down a street into downtown Bluefield.

Slay Basketball Camp set for July 5-8

One of Tamar Slay’s favorite times of the year is coming up. The sixth annual Slay Basketball Camp will return to Beckley July 5-8 at Woodrow Wilson High School. The camp is normally held before the Fourth of July but had to be put off a few weeks because of the effect Covid-19 had on the sports calendar.

Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department receives $5,000 DUI grant

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – One Raleigh County law enforcement department receives a grant to continue to keep impaired drivers off of the road. The Raleigh County Commission approves a DUI grant worth $5,000 for the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Department. The grant is used to pay deputies working overtime with the sole purpose of monitoring the roads for impaired drivers.

STEM camp students engage in science demonstrations, inquire about college admissions

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – Bio-diesel and college admissions all in one day. Raleigh County high school students at the WVU Tech STEM camp learning about both science and their futures on-campus Wednesday. The morning session included creating bio-diesel and studying the human lung, while the afternoon was spent taking a tour of campus and getting advice from the WVU Tech Admissions Office. An employee from Conn-Weld Industries in Princeton was also on hand to answer questions about post-graduate life.
