Did you know... what business this was and where it was located? Brooks Ice Cream shop on Bateman between 2nd and 3rd Streets. This building is still located behind our post office today. In a time when we had passenger train service, this was a popular spot for travelers waiting for their train. Perry has been home to any number of ice cream parlors, in different locations. I remember Mar's Dairy Bar, Moxley's and Overton's to mention a few. What shops do you remember and where were they located? Great summer memories from growing up in Perry.

(Cass County, Iowa) – Cass County Wellness Director Brigham Hoegh reports mobile food pantries will be held in both Atlantic and Anita, in June. A mobile pantry is a traveling food pantry that delivers food directly to families in need for a one-day distribution. Mobile food pantries are available free of charge. SIOUX CITY -- A man found guilty of beating a Sioux City homeowner to death while breaking into his home a second time will see his prison sentence reduced after the Iowa Court of Appeals ruled there was insufficient evidence for one of the charges of which he was convicted.

Memorial Day is fast approaching, and a local family is seeking the public’s help on Monday to help raise money for a cancer battle. The Feilmeier family is hosting a Memorial Day Picnic Fundraiser on Monday, May 31, at the Westside Community Building. The event is a free-will donation, and they are serving hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, salads, and bars from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Westside Fortnightly Club and the Bunko Crew.

The Rippey American Legion Post will provide a gun salute at the Pleasant Hill cemetery on Sunday and will present arms Monday at Fairview Cemetery at 9 a.m., Angus Cemetery at 10 a.m., the Old Rippey Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and conclude with the final salute at the Rippey Cemetery at 11 a.m.

The Emergency Rescue Services in Panora and Stuart approached the Guthrie County Supervisors recently with a proposal to become an essential service in the county. Panora EMS Director Joe Hupp says with a vote from the Supervisors to make EMS an essential service that will allow them to have an EMS tax levy measure for residents to vote in the November election, which that would need 60 percent to pass. Hupp explains both Panora and Stuart EMS’s budgets have been in the red and their sources of compensation have not been sufficient.

MENLO, Iowa — A famous roadside attraction south of Menlo is painted and ready for Memorial Day. According to the Freedom Rock's website, the Freedom Rock "is a large (approx. 60+ ton) boulder located in rural Iowa that is repainted every year with a different thank uou for our nation's veterans to honor their service to our country."

Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, will remain at the helm of the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) for the 2022/23 school year. Last week, the Centerville Community School District announced Berlau was one of four finalists in their search for a new lead administrator, but the position was offered to North Hill Elementary Principal, Mark Taylor. Centerville’s search for a new superintendent began in March when their current superintendent announced his plans to retire at the end of the current fiscal year. Berlau, who has been with CCSD since 2019, says his interest in the position was the result of wanting to be closer to family in that part of the state.

St. Patrick Catholic Church will say a Memorial Day Mass Monday, May 30 at 9 a.m. in the Catholic section of Violet Hill Cemetery. No reservation is needed. Celebrants are advised to bring a lawn chair. In the event of rain, the Mass will be canceled.

The Glidden City Council met on Monday and discussed distribution meter replacement at the water plant and construction extension to King Construction on the water plant improvement project. City Administrator, Brooke Peterson, says the current distribution meter at the water plant isn’t working correctly, and they are trying to get a new one.

A whirlwind of criminal activity, punctuated by a high-speed chase and a city-wide search, has landed a Jefferson man an attempted murder charge. Zachary Waters-Rice, 25, was busy on the night of May 16 and into the morning hours of the next day, forcing local enforcement officers into a frantic, nerve-wrecking search. Waters-Rice was eventually charged with third degree burglary and fourth degree mischief after using a stolen vehicle as his apparent getaway car.
