5th suspect in killing of Hickory man in custody, police say

HICKORY, N.C. — Weeks after the Hickory Police Department said four teens were accused of killing a man at his apartment, officers now say a fifth suspect is in custody. On June 13, police said 35-year-old Shonniel Blackburn was gunned down around 12:30 p.m. near 1st Street SW. Police were eventually able to take four teens into custody: three 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old.

Storm drain corn stalk is talk of this NC town. 'Steve' has lots of fans watching his growth

How is one corn stalk getting so much attention? Maybe it is the location, or maybe it is the number of people watching it grow on their daily commutes. On Thursday, Alexandria Houston started what became a chain of Facebook posts in a group called The Hickory Bubble. The post was about a single stalk of corn growing from a storm drain across from the Sheetz gas station on Springs Road in Hickory.

Around 11:19 a.m., the Newton Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash at the American Legion Fairgrounds located on US Highway 70 in Newton.

Man Charged With Firing Gun In Downtown Boone

A Morganton man is under arrest after firing a gun in downtown Boone, then fleeing into Caldwell County. On Thursday morning, June 30th at 2:11 a.m., Boone Police Officers were dispatched to Boone Saloon, located at 489 W. King St., regarding a possible impaired driver and a disturbance at the business after the patron was asked to leave at closing. The suspect left prior to arrival of officers; however, according to witnesses, fired one round from what was later to be determined as a 9 mm handgun, before fleeing the scene. A vehicle description, along with registration information was broadcast to surrounding law enforcement agencies.
