MANASSA, Colo. — An 84-year-old firefighter from Manassa lost his life to a heart attack after responding to a call on Sunday. Herold Cordova worked with the Manassa Fire Department since he was 18 years old. He often worked alongside fire departments from neighboring departments because mutual aid is frequently called. On Sunday, Cordova responded to a call from the Romeo Fire Department, an agency he worked alongside often.

ANTONITO — Conejos County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of shots fired at a home in the 7000 block of County Road 13 the night of April 22. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies found a house that had been struck several times by bullets. Bullets were found inside the residence that had passed through an outside wall.

A dust storm warning is now in place for parts of Alamosa, Rio Grande, Saguache, Costilla and Conejos counties, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

SANFORD– Conejos County deputies, Colorado State Patrol troopers and officers from Sanford and Manassa responded to a fire that may have been intentionally set on April 23 in Sanford. Reports stated that a male and female were seen starting a fire in a vacant field near 595 Kalmia Street. A quick response by Sanford, Manassa, Romeo, Antonito and La Jara Fire Departments put the fire out. No structures were damaged in the fire. Approximately five acres burned.
