Greene History Notes: In praise of The Catskills

I’ve only just this past month discovered Alf Evers, and am now well into his famed 1972 history The Catskills: From Wilderness to Woodstock. Despite having not yet finished it I’m already fairly convinced that it should be mandatory reading for all residents in the vicinity of the Catskill Park. The Catskills is a history filled with ghosts and folk tales which sports more fascinating anecdotes and citations than I could shake a stick at. Evers weaves a remarkable vision of the mountains from many disparate threads and revels in the intersection of “history” and “story” with an unapologetically literary flare. Frankly there could be no other more appropriate treatment of the subject, as the Catskills are equally a composition of geology and the minds eye working in concert to render looming peaks and hidden valleys filled with larger than life characters and Edenic scenes. Each chapter is nothing less than good fun.

Film Crews Suspected of Spending Counterfeit Bills at Local Businesses

The inconvenience of having film crews buzzing all over the Hudson Valley is supposed to bring in money to local businesses, but what if that money is just a Hollywood prop?. The uptick in major motion pictures and television series filming in the area has been met with both excitement and exasperation. While it's great to see local landmarks on the big screen, some Hudson Valley residents wonder if all of the disruptions are really worth it.

Dear Local Hudson Valley TV News Station: Please Fix Your Audio

I like having a local TV news station. I’m a television kind of person, and I like to keep up with what’s going on here in the Hudson Valley. My provider only has one local news station, and as far as reporting goes, they’re not too bad. The reporters and anchors are likeable and good at what they do. But it’s very hard to watch.
