On Friday July 1, 2022, at 7:33 AM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department Sand Creek Division were dispatched to the intersection of Powers Boulevard and Aeroplaza Drive regarding a two-vehicle traffic crash. Officers arrived and learned a red Mazda was traveling north on Powers Boulevard. A Blue Ford truck was traveling south on Powers Boulevard making a left turn to go east on Aeroplaza Drive Upon entering the intersection, the left front corner of the Mazda struck the right front corner of the blue Ford truck. Members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department and American Medical Response arrived on scene and began rendering aid to both drivers. The driver of the red Mazda did not survive his injuries and was deceased on scene. The driver of the blue Ford truck was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

On Monday June 27, 2022, at 8:36 AM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department Stetson Hills Division were dispatched to 7575 Hickorywood Drive regarding a single motor vehicle traffic crash. Upon arrival officers learned the involved vehicle was traveling south on Havenwood Drive when the vehicle drove off the right side of the roadway through a fence and into a backyard. Members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department along with American Medical Response provided medical aid to the driver who suffered serious life-threatening injuries. The driver was transported to a local hospital for further treatment of those injuries.

On Friday June 24, 2022, at 3:33 PM members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Falcon Division, were dispatched to the intersection of East Woodman Road and Campus Drive. regarding a motorcycle versus truck traffic crash. Responding officers arrived on scene and found that the motorcycle was traveling east on East Woodman Rd and the truck was traveling west making a left turn to travel south on Campus Drive. As the truck started to turn the driver of the motorcycle tried to brake to avoid contact. In doing so the driver of the motorcycle was ejected from the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle received medical treatment from both Colorado Springs Fire Department and American Medical Response however the driver succumbed to his injuries and was deceased on scene.

On July 3, 2022 at approximately 8:24am, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) were dispatched to a domestic disturbance call for service in the 1800 Block of Landis Court. Initial information from the reporting party was that they were being threatened by a suspect in the house with a gun and that they were being assaulted. Upon officers’ arrival they located a distraught female in the front yard and observed a male walk back into the residence. During the investigation, officers were advised that the male had threatened to kill the female and then kill himself when officers arrived. The officers determined there was probable cause to arrest the male for felony domestic violence related charges, including Menacing. While officers interviewed the female, other officers began making attempts to contact the male who had gone back into the residence but were unsuccessful. Eventually, assistance from the CSPD Tactical Enforcement Unit was requested and they responded to the residence to assist with the barricaded suspect.

On November 12, 2021, the Colorado Springs Police Department, Crimes Against Children Unit was notified of a deceased 15-month-old child, Cairo Jak Astacio. The investigation revealed that Cairo died of a fentanyl overdose while in his home. The infant’s parents, Joenny Astacio (Age 36) and Kira Villalba (Age 29) were both found to be under the influence of fentanyl at the time Cairo passed away. A search of the residence revealed drug paraphernalia and illegal narcotics. Detectives continued working this active investigation.

The City of Colorado Springs today announced a path forward for the Westside Community Center. The center, located in Old Colorado City, will operate as a public-private partnership. This new operational model, which integrates feedback from resident recommendations, includes City staffing and operational funding and provides partnership and revenue-generating opportunities with external entities, including nonprofit organizations. On June 24, 2022, at approximately 1:13PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Communication Center was notified by the El Paso County Communications Center of a possible homicide victim in a vehicle at the El Paso County Jail, 2739 E. Las Vegas St. The El Paso County Jail is located within the city of Colorado Springs and detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department Homicide/Assault Unit responded to assume the investigation. Detectives were informed by El Paso County Sheriff Office Deputies that 52-year-old David Mitchell of Colorado Springs walked into the Jail to turn himself in for having killed his wife. Deputies subsequently responded to the visitor parking lot of the Jail and found a deceased adult female inside a vehicle. During the investigation, detectives learned the death occurred in unincorporated El Paso County. After coordinating with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, CSPD Homicide/Assault Unit Detectives continued the investigation and obtained probable cause to arrest Mr. Mitchell for First Degree Murder. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on June 24, 2022.

The City of Colorado Springs has added additional red-light cameras at four intersections as part of the “Red-Light Safety Camera Program.” The goal of the red-light camera program is to protect drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians from injuries or crashes caused by red-light running. It is also a component of the Colorado Springs Police Department’s effort to reduce crashes and improve citizen safety in Colorado Springs. The new intersections will go live, July1, 2022, and a 30-day warning period. Following the warning period, a $75 fine will be implemented for violators.

On Saturday June 18, 2022, at 10:47 PM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Gold Hill Division were dispatched to the area of Espanola Street and N. Nevada Avenue regarding a truck versus motorcycle traffic crash. Upon arrival officers learned that the motorcycle was traveling south on Nevada Avenue without any lights on. As the motorcycle entered the intersection of Nevada and Espanola the motorcycle struck the left front fender of a pick-up truck traveling east on Espanola Street. Members of Colorado Springs Fire and AMR attempted to provide aid to the motorcycle rider however the rider succumbed to his injuries and was deceased on scene.

On Saturday June 18, 2022, Colorado Springs Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of S. Chelton Road and Zebulon Drive regarding car versus motorcycle traffic crash. Officers arrived on scene and discovered that a Chevrolet sedan was traveling east on S. Chelton Road making a left turn to travel south on Zebulon Drive. As the Chevrolet sedan was making the turn the sedan was struck on the front passenger side of the vehicle by a motorcycle traveling west on Chelton Road. Members of the Colorado Springs Fire Department and American Medical Response arrived on scene and treated the motorcycle rider for serious life-threatening injuries prior to transporting the motorcycle rider to a local hospital.

The City of Colorado Springs’ Planning Commission and Downtown Review Board meetings will both take place at a new location and on new days each month starting in July. Both groups will meet at the Regional Development Center (RDC) at 2880 International Circle. Both boards are tasked with review and approval of development applications.
