Aggies Mailbag: Texas A&M turns to 'Cuban Missile' to avoid crisis

COLLEGE STATION — Not every quarterback needs a nickname. Texas A&M’s Zach Calzada does, however, especially when he routinely delivers missiles. Hence: the Cuban Missile. Calzada, A&M’s new starting quarterback with Haynes “The King” King out for at least the next month with a fractured tibia, owns one of the best arms I’ve seen in a quarter-century of covering college football. That’s no secret.

Mike “Radar” Ricke earned his nickname because he was a dead ringer for Radar O’Reilly in the M*A*S*H* television series, but little did his eighth-grade classmate in La Marque know Ricke’s life would mirror the loveable, caring, thoughtful fictional character. 8 players to look out for against the Lobos

On Saturday, Sept. 18, Texas A&M will host the University of New Mexico in College Station for the second home football game of the season. With redshirt freshman quarterback Haynes King officially out with a fractured right tibia, A&M has been shaken up going into the matchup against the Lobos. Boasting a former three-year SEC starting quarterback and currently undefeated record, New Mexico might be A&M’s toughest opponent of the season so far. Here is a list of players to look for during Saturday’s matchup:

Rattlers roll past Mexia

MEXIA – Last year Mexia had their way at Rattler Stadium, so it was only right that Navasota return the favor on Blackcat turf with a convincing 63-21 win. Mexia (1-2) used an explosive 48-yard run for the first score, but Navasota (1-2) answered with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns. Ja’marion Frear crossed the goal line from a yard out and Xavier Steptoe caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Ja’mar Jessie.
