A splash of color: Sheriff's Office participating in Pink Patch Program

Colfax County deputies will be sporting pink patches in October and members of the public can get their own emblem to support breast cancer awareness. As part of the worldwide Pink Patch Project, the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office is now selling a pink version of deputies’ uniform patches to raise both awareness and money for breast cancer, Sheriff Shawn Messerlie said.

Relationship between school, police improving following February incident

In the months since law enforcement sent a letter to the Schuyler school board listing complaints about their relationship, officials on both sides said things have improved. The letter described the handling of an incident on Feb. 24 in which a student brought weapons to Schuyler Central High School. According to the letter, there was a 90-minute gap between when weapons were found and law enforcement was called.

Schuyler Mayor Jon Knutson is urgin residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19. “I just wish we would have more people getting vaccinated right now,” Knutson said, adding he had heard from the East-Central District Health Department that vaccinations were in a lull. “The research shows if we don’t get up to 70%, we’re still vulnerable as far as building immunity.”

Residents ducked under the entrance to the Colfax County Recycling Center on Thursday, April 29, to check in and start cleaning up streets. Inside the dimly lit building were organized sections of materials like milk jugs, newspapers and old TVs. The funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 23, 2021, at Kracl Funeral Chapel in Schuyler with Jerry L. Kracl officiating. Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday. Committal in the Schuyler Cemetery with fire department and military honors. Lunch followed at the Schuyler Golf Club.

Colfax County looking to bid out bridge projects

Colfax County is looking to bid out bridge projects for work on a couple of bridges damaged in the 2019 floods as it waits for Federal Emergency Management Agency approval. The County's plan is for total bridge replacements on Road 14 and Road K. But the work done depends on FEMA's decision, Colfax County Emergency Manager and Highway Superintendent Mark Arps said.

Ledon one of few female officers in Colfax County

Alyssa Ledon is one of just a few women to have worked in the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office. She’s the first female deputy hire of Sheriff Shawn Messerlie’s tenure.
