Kicks for Kids kicks off a new school year

Kicks for Kids is a program that takes donations from the Brown County community before the school year starts. The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce asks the schools what shoe sizes they need, and then the Chamber delivers those shoes to the school counselors to disperse to students. A good turnout came for Kicks for Kids, with La Botana providing free meals for all who donate.

MICHAEL BUNKER: A Cup of Freedom

We locked the apartment and skirted the Tres Leches building and strolled up Brown and then past the gym and up the narrow street toward the courthouse. While some of the businesses are being fixed up and renovated or rebuilt and revitalized, others lie fallow, and you just hope someone will do something with them someday. Everything is someone’s memory.

Fishing Report

SLOW. Water slightly stained; 86-88 degrees; 5.84 feet low. In the Texas heat, fishing is tough with fish clinging under docks, or in open water following bait balls. Bass are slow to three pounds scattered all over the lake biting on shaky heads and crankbaits. Crappie to one pound are excellent on minnows in 12-15 feet of water over brush piles and structures. White bass are slow on crankbaits and jigs under the lights at night and some schooling action throughout the day. Catfish are good on prepared baits around baited holes and the flats.

Three Generations Have Kept Underwood’s Cafeteria Serving Barbecue for 76 Years

An image of a cowboy in a white apron ringing a dinner bell towers high above Commerce Street in Brownwood. His name is Elmo, and he has beckoned diners into Underwood’s Cafeteria for decades, though the restaurant’s 1946 founding predates him by several years. This location, now run by the third generation of Underwoods, is the only one remaining of dozens of Underwood’s barbecue restaurants that spanned much of Texas and two other states.

MICHAEL BUNKER: Nostalgia

It was Sunday and we drove to Early on that beautiful Central Texas day. It was clear with blue skies and some light puffy clouds, and the day was pleasant to look at so long as you were in the air conditioning and not out in it for very long. Sunday is one of the only days we leave downtown. Once we’re up and going on Sunday sometimes we drive out to Early and go to Butterbeans, which is an antique/junk store and that’s what we were doing on this Sunday. After Butterbeans we drive the handful of miles back to Brownwood and we go to Ricochet, which is another antique shop we like.
