Ferrante loses appeal in 2013 poisoning death of his wife

A former University of Pittsburgh neuroresearcher convicted of poisoning his wife with cyanide lost his appeal in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court on Thursday. Robert Ferrante, 73, who is serving a sentence of life in prison without parole at the State Correctional Institution at Houtzdale, was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing his wife, Dr. Autumn Klein, in April 2013.

DA shuts down 'nuisance bar' Sweeney's Steakhouse after double shooting

(KDKA) - Sweeney's Steakhouse and Pub in Rostraver Township was shut down because it was a threat to public safety, Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli said Friday.Citing several recent violent incidents, including a double shooting on Sunday, Ziccarelli along with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board closed the restaurant, calling it a nuisance bar. It comes after owner Debra Hardy posted on Facebook earlier this week, saying doors were closed after nearly 26 years. "We would like to thank our loyal customers who have supported us throughout the years and will cherish the many wonderful and fun memories that were had," the post said. Ziccarelli, however, says her office was the one that closed the eatery down and it needed to be done. "It is my determination that this is the only way to abate the problems that have brought violence to this community and placed law enforcement officers in grave danger," Ziccarelli said.The restaurant is for sale and Ziccarelli made clear if new ownership is found, it will be allowed to resume operations.

Fire forces dozens of senior citizens from North Braddock apartment building

NORTH BRADDOCK, Pa. (KDKA) - More than three dozen senior citizens living at Shady Park Place in North Braddock evacuated after a fire Friday. All residents, mostly in their 70s, 80s and 90s, will be displaced for the holiday weekend. Black Forge coffee in Allentown reopening under new ownership

After announcing in May that its Allentown coffee shop was closing after nearly seven years in operation, Black Forge will be reopening this month thanks to new ownership. Kelly Braden owns and operates the eccentric gift shop The Weeping Glass just down the street in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood.
