Dish & Drink KC: A tiki pop-up in Westport this weekend, a new sports bar in Waldo, and your last weekend to order Observation Pizza
Now open: Social debuts as Waldo’s newest sports bar. Though the restaurant Brick + Mortar worked to pull crowds to 7425 Broadway after Tanner’s ended its 20-year stint in the location, the concept never really caught on. The brand-new Social, which is now open to the public, hopes to cement itself as a permanent fixture in the neighborhood.
Finally, socializing has returned to our realm and the Waldo neighborhood welcomes a new bar and grill, Social. This upscale sports bar at 7425 Broadway replaces the former Tanner’s Bar and Grill. Owners Shawn Larson and Tyler Humar, and general manager, Dave Meeker have a combined 50 years in the restaurant business and are excited about their new venture. As the song goes, these guys “just wanna have fun.” With a 144 inch TV behind the bar, 19 additional TV’s, 22 beers on tap, bottled beer and cocktail specials, live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, having fun is a given.
Dish & Drink KC: Two new spots for Tacos in Waldo and South KC, and you can now finally drink outdoors in downtown Shawnee
Check it Out: Two new spots for tacos in Waldo and South KC. There can never be too many tacos in this world, and in the past several months diners in Waldo and the adjacent slice of South KC have two new options for fresh, made-to-order street tacos. Both are well worth your time. First, Taco Cacao, a food truck which enjoys a permanent spot at 7927 Wornall Road, just around the corner from KC Bier Company (a visit to both makes for a great afternoon). Taco Cacao is the baby/little cousin to Cacao Restaurante, the underrateed full-service Mexican/pizza restaurant on 103rd and State Line. Taco Cacao, like its parent restaurant, is flavor-forward and playful (its logo features a cartoon pig served up in a taco shell). The menu here is pretty streamlined: choose from six fillings, including birria (more on birria in a sec), chicken al pastor, Tex-Mex ground beef, pork cochinita (a tangy red sauce), Asada (steak), or mixed veg, and then take them home in taco or burrito form.
Qdoba is gearing up for the summer traffic and is temporarily suspending operations in order to hold its culinary training and new staffing classes. In an effort to combat the current unemployment trend, Qdoba will be re-training and onboarding a larger number of local Hays workforce.
