Body Braden “Bubba” Ford Higdon passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2021 in rural Rooks County, Kansas at the age of 23. He was born in Hays, Kansas to Misty (Jenkins) and Brad Higdon on September 22, 1997. Braden grew up in Stockton and attended Plainville High School where he graduated with the Class of 2016. He then attended Pratt Community College and later transferred to NCK Tech where he graduated in 2019 with a degree in Automotive Technology.

Kenneth LeRoy “Kenny” McCormick 1944 - 2021

HAYS — Kenneth LeRoy “Kenny” McCormick, 76, Hays, died Saturday, June 5, 2021 at HaysMed. He was born Aug. 5, 1944 in Wichita, Kan., the third son of John P. and Armella (Leiker) McCormick. He graduated from Great Bend High School. On Nov. 28, 1964 he was united in marriage to his high school girlfriend, Gloria Ann Scheck. She preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 2015 after 51 years of marriage. Kenny managed a Phillips 66 station in Emporia, worked for his dad in construction, and for 30 years worked for Schult Homes in Plainville, retiring in 1998. Kenny and Gloria then moved to Hays and for a little more than three years Kenny worked part-time for the City of Hays. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the St. Mary’s Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council #6984, and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a jack-of-all-trades and handyman who would lend a helping hand when friends and family needed home maintenance and repairs. Kenny enjoyed woodworking, building, whittling, and tinkering with many projects.

Hays - Edmund J. "Ed" Peters, Jr., 87, Hays, died Thursday, June 3, 2021 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society. He was born August 7, 1933 in Brownell, Kansas the son of Edmund J. and Eleanoria (Rupp) Peters. In 1951 he graduated from Kinsley High School and attended Fort Hays State University for two years. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 8th Infantry Division in Germany. He was a supervisor on the shipping dock for the United States Post Office in Hays for 32 years, retiring in 1988. In 1989 he started working at Flax Lawn and Landscape, a second career that would last another 30 years. On January 21, 1956 he was united in marriage to Norene C. Wasinger in Hays and she preceded him in death on March 31, 2012 after celebrating over 56 years of marriage. His memberships included: St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Joseph 3rd degree Knights of Columbus council #1325, and the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. Ed enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, baking, playing cards, and teaching his grandchildren hunter's safety. His faith and family were of utmost importance to him and he was quick to share his wry smile and sense of humor.

Hays family takes time on Memorial Day to remember ‘Baby Alma, the Fat Lady of the Circus’

HAYS, Kan. (KWCH) - “Baby Alma,” once billed by a traveling carnival as “the Fat Lady of the Circus,” died in Hays more than 100 years ago at the age of 17. Alma was reported to have weighed nearly 600 pounds. She was also known as “The Australian Giantess,” and the “largest woman alive.” She traveled the country with the carnival, making her final stop in Hays in 1918. That’s where she caught the Spanish flu and died from pneumonia. The carnival left her, and “Baby Alma” didn’t have any family that claimed her.

Dorothy Marie Sauer

Hays - Dorothy Marie Sauer, 99, Hays, died Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Via Christi Village in Hays. She was born May 8, 1922 in Vincent, Kansas one of eleven children to Henry and Mary (Schrage) Haselhorst. She started her education in Vincent and completed it in Schoenchen. While growing up, she assisted with the farm work using horse drawn machinery and helping herd cattle. She rode horseback three and a half miles to attend religion classes five times a week. On August 5, 1940 she was united in marriage to Clarence Sauer in Antonino, Kansas. He preceded her in death on December 4, 1998. Dorothy was sworn in as Postmaster of Antonino on November 1, 1950, a position she would hold until her retirement over 30 years later on January 9, 1981. The Antonino Post Office was housed in the Sauer Service Phillips 66 Filling Station, and Dorothy would help fill gas, check the oil, or sell candy and pop. Her memberships include: Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, the Antonino Christian Mothers, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Sunflower Polka Club, and she helped establish the Antonino Cemetery Association. She was very involved in the Antonino community, proudly patriotic, enjoyed music, singing with her gospel group, teaching kids to dance, and loved flower gardening and visiting with children at the post office.

George A. Lang

George A. Lang, 96, Hays, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Hays Medical Center. He was born on September 2, 1924 in Victoria, the son of Anthony J. and Katherine (Wiesner) Lang. On April 6, 1948, he married Lenora M. Kuhn in Victoria. She preceded him in death on August 19, 2013 after 65 years of marriage. George was a graduate of Victoria Rural High School who served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during WWII, taking him to Austria, Germany, and France as a translator. He played baseball for Toulon and Catherine and remained an avid baseball fan all his life. He was a lifelong farmer and stockman, who loved the land, driving the tractor and riding in the combine at harvest time, and farming. He was a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the Third Degree St. Nicholas Knights of Columbus Council #10044, Hays VFW Post #9076, and was a Perpetual Adorer for many years. He was often seen at daily mass at St. Nicholas. George had an infectious smile for all that broadened wider at the sight of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Randall Wayne "Randy" Jordan, Sr. Randall Wayne "Randy" Jordan, Sr., 75, Hays, died Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Ascension St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born March 14, 1945 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Larry and Rose (Gilmore) Jordan. He was a graduate of Beason High School in Beason, Illinois in the class of 1964. On September 4, 1964 he was united in marriage to Sue Clifton in Denver, Colorado, and they celebrated 56 years of marriage. Randy was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 until 1968. He was a car salesman for James Motor Company for 25 years, a house builder, the owner and operator Jordelies, and after retirement started his frame shop, Acme Frame. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and a lifetime member and past Commander of Hays VFW Post #9076. He loved fishing, golfing, hunting, and being at his and Sue's lake house on Tenkiller Lake in Oklahoma. Most of all, Randy absolutely adored his family and their time together.

David Robert “Dave” Halbleib

He was born December 2, 1951 in Hays, the son of Robert and Eleanor (Leiker) Halbleib. In 1969, he graduated from McCracken High School and in 1971, he earned an Associate Degree in electronics from Northwest Kansas Technical College. He was united in marriage on September 2, 1972 to Judy Linden in McCook, Nebraska and they celebrated 48 years of marriage. Dave was a television repairman, owned and operated Dave's TV and Appliance, and was a farmer and cattleman in the Brownell area. After retiring from farming, Dave and Judy moved to Hays, and for 18 years he worked in the deli at Walmart. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Ransom. Dave collected coins, liked cars, was a handyman, and enjoyed woodworking and making walking sticks out of old tree limbs. He loved his family and spending as much time as possible with his grandchildren.

He was born to James and Marie (Boller) Kaba on April 14, 1936 in Plainville. James was a lifetime resident of Plainville. He attended Plainville Grade School and graduated from Plainville High School. He entered the United States Army following his graduation and returned home when he was honorably discharged. James was united in marriage to Janice (Jacobs) Kaba on October 1, 1960 in Antonino, Kan. The couple was blessed with three children: Vicki, Kim, and John.
