RAY CITY – Ray’s Millpond Cafe was one of three small business to be awarded $20K for nationwide Small Business Hero Day contest. Ray’s Millpond Cafe has been a pillar within the community for nearly 60 years. Michael and Heather Heard took over the family’s generational cafe in January 2020 – just before COVID hit – and experienced several short-term closures. Even when the cafe was losing money, these owners ensured that every employee was still paid – and they even raised their wages to help them through the difficult times.

John L. “Johnny” Harris, III

John L. “Johnny” Harris, III, 87, of Valdosta, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022, after a period of declining health. Born in Valdosta to the late J.L. Harris, Jr. & Flossie Smith Harris, he graduated from Valdosta High School in 1953 where he wore jersey #46 as he played football for the Wildcats under Coach Wright Bazemore. Following high school, he attended Georgia Tech before joining the United States Air Force. In 1974, Mr. Harris retired from the Air Force after a 20-year career and returned to his hometown. Upon his return, he and his brother, Charlie, started Harris Surveying Company where he worked for several years before taking a position as the Inventory Supervisor at Valdosta State College. He retired a second time in 1997 after working at VSC for 13 years.

VALDOSTA — Coleman B. Altman, 92, passed away Thursday, June 23, 2022, at Holly Hill Nursing Home in Valdosta where he had been a resident since June 2021. A proud and self-reliant person, he was described by his sister, China Altman, as having “worked and looked after his own life until last year when he had to go to the nursing home because he was legally blind although he could see a little bit.” He lived for many years on East Blackshear Avenue.
