The Gila Regional Medical Center Governing Board, composed of the five members of the Grant County Commission, made another step toward a partnership with New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants during their meeting Thursday, voting to give board Chair Alicia Edwards authority to sign a contract with Dr. Barbara L. McAneny, the oncologist who would provide services at the hospital’s cancer center.

Silver to lift fire restrictions Friday

The Silver City Town Council held their regular meeting Tuesday evening, where Fire Chief Milo Lambert announced the lifting of fire restrictions, effective July 1. “We may have just gotten a little bit of moisture in the last two weeks. It’s been kind of nice,” he said. “We’re extremely thankful for getting that moisture we’re getting — now we’re filling sandbags.”

Due to successful fire extinguishing efforts, the Black Fire is now managed by a local Type 3 team led by incident commander, Joe Sampson. The Black Fire’s phone number and email address is no longer active. For future updates, contact the Gila National Forest at 575-388-8201 or the local Public Information Officer, Larry.smith@usda.gov. The Black Fire emergency closure on National Forest System lands around the Black Fire area remains in effect. Route 152 is open from mile marker 40 (Kingston) to mile marker 15 (San Lorenzo). Visitors are requested to continue to practice caution in the area and be aware of increased fire traffic. The Gila National Forest has lifted all fire restrictions, but visitors must remember that fireworks are NEVER permitted on National Forests.
