Brunswick at Mentor football: Preview capsule for Sept. 24 game

Records: Mentor 3-2 (0-0 GCC), Brunswick 3-2 (1-0 GCC) Last week: Mentor def. Clarkson, Canada, 41-19, Brunswick def. Euclid, 38-18 For the record: While Brunswick opened league play last week with a win over Euclid, this is Mentor’s GCC opener. The Cardinals experienced an offensive onslaught last week with 41 points, part of which was fueled by a defense that created eight turnovers. Freshman QB Scotty Fox continues to make progress leading the offense, as he threw for five touchdowns in the game. RB Brenden Panhorst missed last week’s game with a concussion but could be back this week. The receivers are led by Mikey Norwood and Evan Harper. When the offensive line is clicking, this can be a very dangerous and dynamic offense. And if the defense continues to create turnovers as it has, look out. … Ethan Fritz threw for 226 yards and ran for 90 yards last week against Euclid. He will be a main focal point of the Cardinals’ defensive effort.

Football looking for upset against Maryland

The Kent State football team heads into its last non-conference game of the season against the University of Maryland with an unimpressive 1-2 record. But what is impressive is how the Flashes have played across those three games. KSU held No. 6 Texas A&M to a 10-3 score across two...

Pals in Motion event presented in memory of Les Levine

About 1,100 people came to Beachwood High School for Pals In Motion 2021 Sept. 19, including about 200 people who took to the track at the football field for a 5k run. But this was not an average day at the races. InMotion, along with about 100 volunteers, conducted the event to bring awareness to Parkinson’s disease. For the first time in its five-year history, the event was presented by Les Levine’s family, in honor of the longtime Cleveland television and radio sports personality who wrote a weekly column for the Cleveland Jewish News. Levine died Feb. 3 at age 74 following a protracted battle with diabetes and Parkinson’s disease.

Elyria at Olmsted Falls football game preview for Sept. 24

Where: Vitamix Field at Charles A. Harding Memorial Stadium. For the record: Elyria hasn’t had the warmest welcome to the Southwestern Conference. The Pioneers opened with a loss to Berea-Midpark — who looks like a legitimate contender in the conference — and then had a meeting with Avon in Week 5. Now they’ve got the league’s other unbeaten through three weeks in Olmsted Falls. … The Bulldogs put together a complete effort in their Week 5 win over North Ridgeville. Falls ran for more than 300-yards in the first half against the Rangers and came away with a 49-19 win. … Elyria’s offense will need to hit early and often if they want to avoid an 0-3 conference start. The Pioneers offense has struggled over their last two games and if that happens again in Week 6, the game could be over before it starts. The Bulldogs scored their first five possessions in Week 5 and put North Ridgeville out of reach before the first quarter was over.

Lake Catholic at Padua football: Preview capsule for Sept. 24 game

Last week: Kenston def. Lake Catholic, 27-20, Padua def. Bedford, 29-28 For the record: Welcome to the Crown Conference. These two former North Coast League foes now find themselves in the Crown Conference with other former NCL schools VASJ, NDCL and Walsh Jesuit. … Lake Catholic is off to a rough start at 1-4, but had a 20-7 lead on Kenston a week ago before losing with less than a minute remaining in the game. QB Jaxon French has thrown for nearly 900 yards, with his favorite targets being Aiden Fitzgerald and Tyler Seacrist. The Cougars have been a pass-heavy team for the past four weeks, so expect that to be the case again in this one. That being said, pass protection is going to be pretty big for Lake. … Padua had a big fourth-quarter comeback to beat Bedford last week. RB Caden Fyock scored twice in the fourth quarter and finished with 107 yards on 12 carries. Lake Catholic struggled with run defense last week, giving up 380 yards on the ground to Kenston, so the Cougars will look to tighten that up against their longtime league rival.

Avon Lake at Midview football game preview for Sept. 24

For the record: Avon Lake’s ride in the driver’s seat of the SWC lasted all of one week as the Shoremen lost to Berea-Midpark a week after their big win over Avon. Now they’re left to pick up the pieces in Week 6 against a Midview squad that picked up its first win in Week 5. … Avon Lake got its starting quarterback back in Week 5, but lost for the first time as the Titans’ defense played extremely well. … Midview defeated Amherst in Week 5 and was led by the area’s leading passer, Marc Reed. He’s the only area passer with more than 1,000 yards and he wasn’t even the Middies’ starter in Week 1. … The Shoremen will need a strong performance from their defense if they want to bounce back and get back in the win column. Midview could pull the upset if they get another big game from Mason Kucera who torched Amherst last week.

Chagrin Falls at Kirtland football: Preview capsule for Sept. 24 game

Last week: Kirtland def. Geneva, 37-7, Chagrin Falls def. Orange, 34-0 For the record: The Tigers and Hornets played each other four years in a row, with Kirtland winning all four of them. But three of them were close games. Those were non-conference, CVC crossover games. This one counts as a CVC Chagrin Division game. … Kirtland has won 45 games in a row, the fifth-longest winning streak in Ohio football history. The Hornets have outscored the opposition, 167-20. Mason Rus continues to have a huge season running the ball. He ran for 192 yards on only 14 carries last week, with Tommy Gogolin getting 65 yards on three totes. The offensive line led by All-Ohioan George Prusock has been dominating. Kirtland doesn’t throw much, but Gage Sullivan averages more than 20 yards per catch on his 13 receptions. … Chagrin Falls is led by running back Donny Hardy. The big offensive line anchored by Nick Dalessandro and Andrew Bazzone opens a lot of holes. Keep an eye on Cole Ettinger, too, as a playmaker for the Tigers. … This one will come down to run defense, as both teams figure to lean heavily on the running game. It’s been a while since a team has found a way to slow down Kirtland’s.

Avon at North Ridgeville football game preview for Sept. 24

For the record: Surprisingly both teams enter this Week 6 matchup with the same records as North Ridgeville has been one of the area’s most surprising squads this year. … The Rangers are coming off a Week 5 loss to Olmsted Falls. It wasn’t pretty at times, but North Ridgeville made some big plays in the second half to make the final score, 49-19, more respectable. … Avon’s two losses are as good as they come. A Week 2 loss to Medina’s Penn State-bound quarterback Drew Allar and a Week 4 loss to Avon Lake are the only blemishes on their resume. The Eagles bounced back from that loss to the Shoremen with a dominant win over Elyria last week. … The Rangers allowed Olmsted Falls to run for 300-first half yards a week ago and that doesn’t bode well for North Ridgeville against Avon’s talented run game. Sophomore Jakorion Caffey is one of the best runners in the county as evidenced by his ginormous game against Avon Lake.
