Cornelia to temporarily close rail crossing on South Main

If you’re driving through downtown Cornelia next week prepare for a detour. The rail crossing on South Main Street near the Big Red Apple will be temporarily closed. A contractor for Norfolk Southern will be working on the crossing beginning July 5, says city manager Dee Anderson. The work is expected to take four days to complete.

Merle Wood Frye, age 87, of Clarkesville, Georgia went to her heavenly home on Saturday, July 2, 2022, just eight days shy of her 88th birthday. Mrs. Frye was born on July 10, 1934 in Habersham County, Georgia to the late Mont and Lillie Mae Morgan Wood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Phillip Oliver Frye; sisters, Minnie Hames, Lucille Anderson; brothers, Ed Wood, Swain Wood, Bill Wood, Floyd Wood.; and step-grandson, Keith Dodgins. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Frye was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Demorest; where she was active in many community service aspects; including food preparation as well as quilting and working with the ladies groups. Merle was a loving wife, mother and grandmother; she was known to her grandchildren as "Grandma". She had a love for gardening, both flowers and vegetables.

Demorest prepares to celebrate nation's 246th birthday with Glorious Fourth of July Celebration

8 a.m. – Run for Glory sponsored by The Torch. 2 p.m. – Food and merchandise vendors begin setup, activities begin at Demorest Springs Park and will include a bounce house. 4 p.m. – Parade will begin, featuring Habersham Central Band of Blue Director Ryan Dukes and the band. Going back to the parade’s early traditions, city leaders say there will be a focus of children this year. Children are invited to bring their bicycles, wagons, or Power Wheels-type vehicles.

Eugene was a self-employed heavy equipment operator and a Veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam War. In addition to parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anita Meaders.

Cabe serves 21 years with Franklin Police Department

A retirement party was held Tuesday, June 28, at Franklin Town Hall for Dwayne Cabe, a 21-year-veteran of the Franklin Police Department. His career began as a Macon County 911 dispatch operator from 1991 to 1998. He left the dispatcher’s office to work for Sheriff Homer Holbrooks as a deputy from 1998 to 2001. He then moved to the Franklin Police Department working under Chief Terry Bradley in 2001 where he completed his career in law enforcement. Cabe was presented with a plaque thanking him for his service and a set of wheels for his project car, a 1987 Mustang LX convertible. Cabe then turned around and gave a plaque to his wife Amy and his family thanking them for being by his side. In attendance were family, friends, and officers from the Franklin Police Department, Macon County Sheriff Department, Highlands Police Dept., Franklin Fire Dept., town employees and officials.
