Willmar Installing Brighter Lights

Willmar is having new brighter streetlights installed this week, which is part of the streetscape project. The Willmar Municipal Utilities, along with the city, are working together to fund the project. A Small Cities Development grant was earned in 2019, and $400,000 of that is being used for the new lights. They are also working to replace all the bulbs in the streetlights across the city with LED bulbs, hoping to finish the project by the end of 2022.

Man, 67, dies after being pinned by tractor in Kandiyohi County

DOVRE TOWNSHIP, Minn. -- A Willmar man is dead after being pinned by a tractor Wednesday afternoon.According to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened on the 7000 block of 12th Street Northwest in Dovre Township.First responders found a 67-year-old man pinned underneath a utility tractor, which had apparently rolled over near a creek embankment.The man was pronounced dead on the scene. He was not identified by name as family members are still being notified.

Carol Ann (Jeppesen) Houghton, age 84, of Olivia, MN died on Sunday, June 26, 2022 at RenVilla Healthcare Center in Renville. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, June 29th, at 11:00 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Olivia with Rev. Matt Hausken officiating. Burial will be in the Olivia Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 28th, from 4-7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and will continue for one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred and will be donated to charities that are dear to Carol’s heart.

Promising signs of community growth

One of the most pressing needs of communities through rural Minnesota is affordable housing. It is a key to attracting new workers and residents. Last August, the City of Benson agreed to work with Cody Nelson of Nelson Properties of Sauk Centre for the construction of 13 duplexes, or 26 units in two phases, in the Cottage Square area to address Benson’s housing shortage. The first phase of Nelson’s housing project is underway in northeast Benson with construction of four duplexes to be completed by Dec. 31. The second phase involves nine townhomes, 18 units, all to be completed by Dec. 21, 2027. It is estimated the total cost of the completed project will be $3.795 million.

Sheriff: Man Dies After Getting Pinned Under Tractor

(KNSI) – A man was killed near Willmar after a utility tractor tipped and pinned him under the machine. The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office says first responders were called around 5:50 on Wednesday evening to the 7000-block of 12th Street Northwest for a utility tractor that appeared to have tipped on the side of a creek embankment, trapping the 67-year-old underneath.

(Willmar MN-) A Willmar man is dead after being pinned under a tractor north of town Wednesday afternoon. The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Department says the 67-year-old victim was operating a utility tractor on the side of a creek embankment when the tractor tipped and trapped him underneath. The 911 call came in at 5:51 p.m. and emergency crews rushed to the scene in the 7000 Block of 12th Street Northwest in Dovre Township, on the west end of Long Lake. The victim was dead at the scene, and his name has not been released pending notification of family, and the incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.

Sheriff: 60-year-old woman arrested following standoff situation

SPICER, Minn. -- Kandiyohi County officials say less-lethal impact rounds were used to subdue a 60-year-old woman during a standoff situation Sunday.According to officials, the incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at a home on the 200 block of 5th Avenue in Spicer. Deputies were dispatched to a home after a shots fired report. When deputies arrived, they evacuated residents of the house and nearby homes, and set up a perimeter. After initial attempts to contact the 60-year-old woman failed, she eventually exited the home but was not compliant, officials said. That's when less-lethal rounds were used and the suspect was subdued without further incident. The suspect was booked into Kandiyohi County Jail and the case remains under investigation. 

"Olivia Community Night in the Park" aims to provide fun, support, and rebuild relationships

(Olivia MN-) Olivia Mayor Jon Hawkinson invites everyone to a fun time in Henton Park Wednesday night. Hawkinson told the Renville County Register they are having "Olivia Community Night in the Park" starting at 5 p.m. so people can meet each other and rebuild relationships that chilled during the pandemic. They also want to help the community heal after the tragic deaths of Isaac Hoff and Ricky Torres. The city is planning a series of community nights, with Wednesday being the first. Hawkinson says everyone is welcome to drop by Henton Park for pizza and refreshments, disc golf, basketball and possibly kick ball. There will also be education booths and information provided by area public health agencies for anyone who is in need of support.
