Kenai Peninsula Borough assembly members unanimously support funding for school improvements and emergency services

Several important items passed through the consent agenda at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly’s June 21 meeting. Notably, assembly members passed an ordinance which appropriates nearly $400,000 to replace and improve the hot water system for South Peninsula Hospital. They also passed a resolution that would address hazards and provide safe transportation to the Lowell Point community, outside of Seward, which experienced a landslide on May 7 that blocked road access.

Burn closure takes effect before holiday weekend

A burn closure will go into effect in most of Southcentral Alaska starting Friday night. It’s been hot and dry in Southcentral Alaska for most of the summer, pushing the fire risk toward extreme. The Alaska Division of Forestry issued the emergency burn closure order on Thursday, taking effect on Friday just before midnight. All burning that would require a burn permit is now prohibited, including burn barrels, lawn burning, debris piles, commercial and agricultural burning and uncontained fires, like backcountry campfires.

Fourth of July celebrations planned around peninsula

With the Fourth of July coming on Monday and good weather predicted all weekend, it’s looking like a good time to get out and celebrate. Fourth of July is usually one of the bigger holidays around the Kenai Peninsula, with some of the year’s longest days and typically great weather to celebrate. In Kenai, the annual parade and festivities are scheduled to kick off on Monday at 11 a.m. The parade will follow its regular route along Bidarka and Main Streets and down the Kenai Spur Highway, according to Brett Perry with the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center.

National Nonprofit Petco Love Invests In Regional Clear Creek Cat Rescue

Clear Creek Cat Rescue received a $5,000 grant investment from the national nonprofit Petco Love during a celebration at the Soldotna Petco recently. The investment is in support of the rescue’s lifesaving work for animals in Southcentral Alaska. Clear Creek Cat Rescue rescues cats in need from the Kenai Peninsula through to the Mat-Su Borough.

KPBSD Taking Applications For Free Or Reduced Meals For 2022-2023 School Year

The Kenai Peninsula School District is taking applications for free or reduced meals for the 2022-2023 school year. The USDA discontinued universal free meals for students, and KPBSD parents and guardians are encouraged to complete their online meal application so children will have access to meal benefits based on their determination the first day of the school year. The streamlined online application for free and reduced meals to determine benefits and qualify communities for federal funds is currently live. The free service enables families to receive program benefits faster than using a paper application. Your application is electronically submitted directly to the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Student Nutrition services office to process.

Agreement Executed For Hard Rock Resource Extraction In Support Of Kenai Bluff Stabilization

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly enacted an ordinance that provides for an exception to borough code and authorizes the mayor to execute a no-charge agreement with the City of Kenai for hard rock resource extraction from borough-owned land in support of the Kenai Bluff Stabilization Project. The project requires a large amount of hard rock materials and the Borough is choosing to utilize resources adjacent to the Rocky Ridge Landfill that serves Seldovia. The community which aims to expand the landfill and, as such, stands to benefit from the expansion by the removal of hard rock from the site.
