2022 07/06 – William T. “Bud” Lents

William T. “Bud” Lents of Flora, IL passed away Thursday, the 30th of June 2022 in his home, after a long battle with cancer. Bud was born on the 17th of February 1938 in Flora to Frank and Madeline (Gibson) Lents. He graduated from Flora High School. He served our nation in the US Navy for twenty years, obtaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In 1976, Bud retired from the Navy and returned with his family to Flora. He quickly found another way to serve, this time his neighbors, as a US Postal Service letter carrier for twenty years.

2022 07/05 – Lloyd Allan Edwards

Lloyd Allan Edwards, 92, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 2:55 am July 2, 2022, at the Arthur Home in Arthur, Illinois. He was born November 15, 1929, in Springfield, Illinois to the late Walter Lloyd and Lois E. (Duggleby) Edwards. Allan married Joanne McClelland in 1961 and she preceded him in death in 1968. Allan then married Alyce Gissal Bull on December 13, 1969, in Alton, Illinois. After forty-seven years of marriage, she preceded him in death in January of 2017. He then married Joann Erma Johnson on October 20, 2018, at Green Tree in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2020.

2022 07/09 – Stephen Alan Pigg

Stephen Alan Pigg, 73, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 3:59 am June 19, 2022, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon. He was born July 28, 1948, in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Floyd and Laverne (Copple) Pigg. Stephen is survived by his children, Benjamin Irvin Pigg, Gregory James Rector, Ryan Stephen Pigg, and Courtney Clawson; grandchildren, Lauren, Cody, Chase, Hailey, River, Lydia, Chole, Bailey, Aria, and Aylah; great-grandchildren, Lily, Emberlyn, Emmett; brother, Kim Pigg; and sister, Kirby Presswood.

Area fireworks displays planned for the Fourth of July weekend

The annual Vandalia fireworks will be held on Saturday, July 2, at the Vandalia Lake. The display is set to begin around 9:20 p.m.Other vendors are also planned for the celebration.”The kettle corn people who were at the Grande Levee will be out there sometime late afternoon/early evening. The guy who sells light up toys, etc will also be out there sometime in the evening,” Jerry Schukar said.

Burglary Call in Ellery Leads to Arrest

An Erie County man was arrested after Chautauqua County Sheriff's deputies were called to a burglary in progress Thursday afternoon in the Town of Ellery. Deputies responded to a residence on Route 430 shortly before 2:30 PM and located 47-year-old Jonathan Bernacki of Akron on scene. Bernacki was charged with 2nd-degree burglary, 4th-degree criminal mischief, and petit larceny. He was transported to the Chautauqua County Jail for centralized arraignment.


(EFFINGHAM) The Illinois Department of Transportation is alerting those that travel along State Route 130 through Olney, that beginning next Tuesday, July 5th, crews will be working to improve portions of the highway from U.S. Route 50, northward through Olney and Richland County. Alternate routes are recommended. Motorists should observe all signs.

Another Season Finished At The Salem Little League Complex On Friday Night

In Softball Minors, Modern Woodman beat T&K Title for the City Series championship 8-1. In girls Majors, Landers knocked off Dairy Queen in the 3rd and decisive game of their best of 3 City Series winning 10-1. Chelsey Haines had 2 hits and a run, Samara Simmons 2 hits and drove in a run along with Alana Howe with Kinslie Parrish adding 2 hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI. In the loss, DQ’s Jorja English and Ziva Owens had 2 hits each. Alaigha Hughes, Gabby Goosetree, Grayce Rose all singled. Kenzie Collier doubled driving in a run.

Salem Soccer Tryouts July 9th

Salem Soccer will have their Fall tryouts next Saturday, July 9th at FCC Fields. Salem Soccer joins the SWIS league in the Fall. Their season goes from mid-August to October. They travel to Clinton County area teams, Lebanon, Mascoutah, O’Fallon, etc. We will also attend one to two tournaments.

Clark Arrested on Richland County Warrant

On June 27th at approximately 4:00 PM, Deputy Capeheart with the White County Sheriff’s Office was informed by dispatch that 40 year old Larry J Clark of 202 S Monroe in Parkersburg was brought in by the Edwards County Sheriff’s Department for the charge of Domestic Battery. Capeheart learned that Clark was wanted on a Failure to Appear on a warrant out of Richland County for Driving While License Suspended. Capeheart stated that he informed Clark that he was under arrest for the warrant, along with his domestic charge. Bond for Clark was set at $150. He paid bond and was released.


(OLNEY/NEWTON) A reminder that Illinois state law makes it unlawful for the public, without a proper permit, to explode any display fireworks, flame effects, or consumer fireworks. While the City of Olney and other regional communities receive a large number of complaints about this each year, violators in Olney can be fined not less than $75 and no more than $750 per violation. The use of sparklers, party poppers, and snappers however, are not considered to be consumer fireworks. With the proper permit and training, the Richland County Farm & Fair Association will again this year be setting off a proper display of fireworks Monday night in the Olney City Park. Mt. Vernon, Ill. Sanitary Sewer Project moves forward with IEPA loan approval

MT. VERNON, Ill. (KFVS) - The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has approved the loan to the City of Mt. Vernon for a large Sanitary Sewer improvement project. The project includes the construction of new force mains for the Maple Street and Wagner Road lift stations, construction of new gravity flow lines, inlets to the sanitary sewer plant and the lining of various sewer lines in the area of Mannen Street in Mt. Vernon.

Two out of state residents arrested in Mt. Vernon on drug and weapons charges

MT. VERNON, IL — Mt. Vernon police arrested two men Wednesday on multiple drug and weapons charges. According to the police department, 27-year-old Tre-vell Robinson of Grandview Missouri was arrested around 9 a.m. Wednesday on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, possession of between 15 and 100 grams of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of between 5 and 15 grams of methamphetamine and unlawful possession of a firearm.


(OLNEY) Carle Richland Memorial Hospital continues to work on its campus parking lots and roadways, sealing and re-striping around the hospital. The third and final area of work will be done today and tomorrow, involving the roadway on the north and west side of the hospital, starting from the parking lot next to the Rehab Building on Scott Street around to the west administrative walk-in entrance and circle drive. These areas will be closed today and tomorrow. Drivers are asked to observe all signs and barricades. Carle RMH thanks everyone for their patience this past week as the work will be completed this weekend.

Stolen 4-Wheeler Returned to Owners

The White County Sheriff’s Department responded to call in reference to a report of a 4-wheeler being stolen from a residence in Springerton. On June 23rd Officer George Spencer arrived at 124 E Cherry Street and met with Betty L Rush and Curtis R Rush who are the owners of the ATV. Curtis stated that he had parked the 4-wheeler beneath a tree on the north side of their property and began mowing the lawn. Rush said he was mowing when an unknown individual started the mower and drove away. The Rush’s said that they have surveillance footage of the subject taking the 4-wheeler. The footage shows the subject walk past the ATV. The subject then returned and started the vehicle and drove away. The video showed the 4-wheeler being taken at approximately 1:16 pm. On Tuesday, June 28th, the 4-wheeler was located and returned to the owners.

Frank P. Davidson, 98, of Salem, Illinois passed away June 30, 2022, at the St. Louis University Trauma Center with family at his side. Arrangements are pending at the Sutherland – Rankin Funeral Home in Salem, entrusted with the family’s care.
