The Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group met for the first time this summer

Salmon fishing has begun, and the Kuskokwim River Salmon Management Working Group met for the first time this season to advise state fishery managers. The group is made up of fishing managers and stakeholders on the river. It votes on management actions it would like to see on the river and provides its recommendations to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

Federal Subsistence fishing opportunities announced for June 2022

On May 2, 2022, the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge Manager announced by emergency special action 3-KS-01-22 that the Federal government will assume management of Federal waters of the Kuskokwim (from the mouth of the River to the Yukon Delta NWR boundary in Aniak) beginning June 1, 2022, for the conservation of Chinook and chum salmon.

Richie Diehl takes 2nd in Kobuk 440 Sled Dog Race, losing to Hugh Neff by 2 minutes

Musher Hugh Neff and his nine-dog team won their first Kobuk 440 in Kotzebue on April 10, crossing the finish line just two minutes ahead of Aniak's Richie Diehl. The Kobuk 440 takes mushers on a roughly 400-mile trail from Kotzebue to Kobuk and back. Neff led almost the entire race and had a comfortable hour lead on Diehl out of the Kiana checkpoint, just 80 or so miles from the finish.

Fugitive mortality in Aniak

A US Marshals Fugitive Task Force was in Aniak at the request of the Alaska State Troopers to effect a high-risk arrest warrant for 34-year-old Aniak resident Andrew John on February 4, 2022, at approximately 1 pm. John was wanted on a $2,500 felony arrest warrant for Assault III due to an incident that occurred in Aniak on January 29, 2022. As the task force was clearing the house, John shot at the team inside the home striking a Deputy US Marshal. The task force evacuated the wounded deputy and created a perimeter around the house. A short time later, John emerged from his home armed with a loaded shotgun. In response to the threat, multiple members of the task force fired their weapons fatally striking John. John was declared deceased at the scene. John’s next of kin have been notified and his remains are being transported to the Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.

This school year, more than half of the Kuspuk School District’s entire teaching staff is from the Philippines. Aniak child survives attack by two dogs

-------- Two dogs attacked a child Feb. 2 in Aniak. The child received medical care in Aniak, and no criminal charges have been filed. According to Alaska State Troopers, the child was visiting a friend’s house when their loose dog attacked. The troopers said that the dog then dragged the child over to where another dog was tied up, and both dogs bit the child. Troopers confirmed that the child had multiple bite wounds.
