Christmas Valley, Lakeview to host 4th of July festivities

Lakeview and Christmas Valley will both be hosting fireworks displays for area residents and visitors to enjoy on Monday, July 4, as well as other events leading up to the big day. Both displays will be held as the sky gets dark. Christmas Valley’s fireworks are shot from the island in the middle of Baert Lake and can be enjoyed from Floweree Park or surrounding locations. Lakeview’s fireworks celebration will take place at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

Fort Rock. If you haven’t been – you need to go. Its geologic past is stunning. It spans tens of thousands, even millions of years. Yet, one of the things that put Fort Rock on the map in modern times were some sandals found in a cave nearby that only date back, oh, a brief 9,000 years or so.

Half of Prineville’s business section was lost to a fire which began around midnight in the old school house and is believed to be incendiary in origin. Volunteer fire crews were helpless to control the flames due to the high wind until dynamite operations stopped the spread. Four firefighters were injured and help was requested from neighboring communities until the exchange burned. A reward of $1,000 has been offered to catch the person responsible for the fire.

Medical Helicopter Crashes in Christmas Valley

An AirLink medical helicopter crashed while landing at the Christmas Valley Airport on its way to pick up a patient last week. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, which occurred in windy conditions around 5:24 pm on May 18, according to NTSB public affairs officer Peter Knudson.

Virgil Brattain returned to Summer Lake last week from Berkley, Cal., after he graduated from the University of California. His parents Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Brattain attend their son’s graduation ceremonies in California last week and returned home with him. Virgil studied letters and science and has received a very flattering offer from a large financial firm in San Francisco. He will spend the summer on the Summer Lake ranch.

Examining the past

A major celebration is planned in Silver Lake for July Fourth and the completion of the irrigation project on the same day. A committee has been formed and has drawn up a subscription list. Already $200 has been pledged to the celebrations and it is doubtless that more will be raised. While events are still being scheduled it is believed the July Fourth celebrations will last three full days. There will be dancing each night at the Odd Fellows hall with a jazz orchestra, horse races, bucking contests and multiple baseball games.

Airlink helicopter landed hard before rolling over in Christmas Valley

We’ve learned new information about the helicopter that crashed in Christmas Valley yesterday. According to Peter Knudson with the National Transportation Safety Board, the Airbus AS 350B3 medical transport helicopter landed hard in windy conditions and rolled over. Onboard were two pilots and two crewmembers. Two of them sustained serious injuries.
