Woman Struck And Killed When Car Jumps Curb, Hits Building In Gresham

CHICAGO (CBS) — A woman was killed Tuesday morning, when a driver lost control of his car, jumped a curb, and crashed into her and a building in the Gresham neighborhood. The driver and an infant in the car were seriously hurt. Police said a 23-year-old man was driving a Chevy Impala west on 81st Street, and had the green light, when a 26-year-old man driving a Chrysler 300 headed north on Racine ran the red light. The Impala hit the Chrysler, causing it to spin, and jump the curb, hitting a 52-year-old woman on the sidewalk, before hitting a building. Police and Fire Department officials said the woman was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Police said the driver of the Impala suffered a broken arm, and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. Fire Department officials said an infant in the car also was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in serious condition The driver of the Chrysler was not injured. Police said the crash is under investigation, and citations are pending.

2nd person in 2 months is killed on stretch of Milwaukee where road diet was blocked

On Friday night a hit-and-run driver fatally struck a 65-year-old woman on the 4900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue near the Jefferson Park Transit Center. Along with a cyclist killed a few blocks northwest on Milwaukee in late July, the senior was the second vulnerable road user killed on this segment of the avenue. Back in the early 2010s, opponents blocked a road diet on this stretch that might have helped prevent these deaths – more on that below.

2 Dead In Fiery Wrong-Way Crash On Stevenson Expressway Near La Grange Road

COUNTRYSIDE, Ill. (CBS) — Two people were killed early Sunday in a fiery crash on the Stevenson Expressway near La Grange Road. Illinois State Police were called at 2:58 a.m. Sunday for a two-vehicle crash on the southbound Stevenson. State police said a 2006 green BMW 750 was headed the wrong way in the southbound lanes and hit a 2017 white Ford Explorer head-on. Both cars caught on fire, and both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. The driver of the Ford Explorer was identified as Barrett J. Callaghan, 25, of Orland Park. The identity of the driver of the BMW had not been released Sunday afternoon. The southbound lanes of the Stevenson were closed beginning at 3:33 a.m., and traffic was diverted off at 1st Avenue. By 8:30 a.m., all ramps were reopened, but the left and center lanes remained closed. All lanes were back open by just after 9 a.m. Further details were not immediately available.

According to Chicago police, a 26-year-old man driving a Chrysler 300 ran a red light at 81st Street and Racine Avenue just after 10 a.m. A Chevrolet Impala, driven by another man, hit the Chrysler in the intersection, causing it to spin out.

No injuries were reported Tuesday morning after a three-vehicle collision involving a school bus carrying 17 students in Bartlett. Police said Roberto Alvarez, 30, of Chicago, was driving a 2006 Acura TL south on Route 59 about 8:50 a.m. and failed to yield while turning left onto West Bartlett Road, causing a northbound 2019 Volvo semitrailer to strike his car.
