Firefighters, DNR respond to 2,300-acre wildfire burning up Northern Michigan

Firefighters and Michigan DNR are working to contain a 2,300-acre wildfire burning up Montmorency and Cheboygan county. According to officials, those helping to contain the fire started on Friday around 9 p.m. A news release states that 43 firefighters and an additional 13 incident management members are assisting in the fire suppression efforts.

One Injured in Car Crash in Grant Township

A Cheboygan man was injured in a car crash yesterday around 3 p.m. in Grant township, the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office says. The man was driving on South River Rd when the car and trailer went off the road. The car went into the ditch, travelled a short distance and then hit an embankment for a driveway. The sheriff’s office says the car went airborne for a short distance before landing and hitting another driveway embankment and going airborne a second time. The car landed on a gravel parking lot and rolled several times.

Not only does it lie along Lake Huron, but also next to the Cheboygan River. Going back many, many years pre-1800, the land was occupied by the Ojibwe tribe as their campground. Then, in 1844, along came Jacob Sammons who settled the area, calling it “Duncan”.
