AllOnGeorgia recently reached out to Chattooga County Board of Education member Brad Hayes for a Q & A. What have you learned since becoming a BOE member?. Since I was elected in November 2018, I have worked with two school superintendents and soon to be eight school board members. Every superintendent and every school board member was beneficial and talented in various areas. I learned how to listen, observe, and speak up. I learned that I was an elected, public official, and my sole purpose was to represent each student, teacher, staff member, administrator, parent, and citizen. I have also learned that no public official can please everyone, but I try to follow the advice of our late.

Information Regarding Student Meals-Chattooga County Schools

Chattooga School Nutrition will operate under the Seamless Summer Option, provided by USDA, for the 2021-2022 school year. This means all students within the Chattooga County School System will receive free breakfast and free lunch for the 2021- 2022 school year, while funding lasts. If funding expires, families will be notified by local media outlets, as well as letters sent home by students. Students may choose to purchase extra food items and/or snack items at the point of sale within the cafeteria, if desired. However, payment is required for all extra food items and snack items at the time of sale. Extras and snacks may not be charged to the student’s cafeteria account unless there are available funds on the student’s account to cover the cost of the items being purchased.

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry says that he is waiting on final numbers before he makes any decisions regarding property taxes for this year.

When asked by local media if he had seen the property tax numbers for this year, the commissioner said that he had only seen preliminary numbers. Elsberry would not comment on if he expected to see a decrease in the millage rate. When asked specifically about a millage rate decrease, the commissioner said that he was waiting on the final numbers from the tax assessor’s office and said “we will crunch the numbers” at that time.
