Matthew Willingham, captain with Menlo Fire Department has been with the department for 12 years, but his contribution to the community extends far beyond Menlo. “I went to Forsyth for 2 1/2 weeks back in 2019 and received fire instructor 1, fire instructor 2, and live fire instructor so that I could teach the recruit class in Chattooga County if the opportunity ever arose, and so that I would be more qualified to teach weekly training for my department,” Captain Willingham said.

DUI Arrest Made by Summerville Police

The consumption of several Natural Lights while driving ended with a 20 year old man going to jail last weekend. According to reports from the Summerville Police Department, on Friday June 11th, Officers noticed a car traveling down Commerce Street that was swerving side to side in the lane. Officers initiated a traffic stop and when approaching the vehicle did notice the odor of alcohol. Officers then observed 3 open Natural Light cans in the cab of the vehicle.

Police: Rome man fled from traffic stop at speeds above 100 mph

A Rome man was arrested in Chattooga County after fleeing from a traffic stop late Wednesday on Martha Berry Highway, reports stated. Terrance Jermaine Osborne, 43, is charged with felony fleeing from law enforcement officers as well as several marijuana charges. He also faces numerous traffic violation including aggressive driving, driving on the wrong side of the roadway and reckless driving.

Menlo man arrested for DUI after flipping vehicle multiple times on Highway 48 in Chattooga County

According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, on June 2nd, 2021, at approximately 10:37 PM, Sergeant Cain was dispatched to a vehicle crash on GA-48 near Marks Road. Trooper Cain reported, “Once on scene, [I] spoke with the driver of the crashed vehicle. The driver was identified as James Stephen Gladney, 52, of Menlo, by his Georgia driver’s license. As [I] spoke to Gladney about the crash, [I] could detect a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath. [I] asked Gladney if he had consumed any alcohol prior to driving? He stated that he had consumed alcohol a little less than an hour before the crash occurred. [I] then asked him how much alcohol, and what type, had he consumed? He stated that he had consumed four 16 ounce beers prior to driving. During our conversations, Gladney would often repeat himself several times, appearing to forget what he had already told me.” According to the report, Gladney randomly stated that he had about $3,400 in the vehicle with him and began telling the trooper about how he acquired it. The trooper also noticed that there were several open Natural Light beer cans strewn about the inside of his vehicle. Gladney stated he had not been drinking any alcohol while driving. He stated multiple times that a black vehicle caused him to run off the roadway and crash. The witness to the crash stated that she did not observe any other vehicle in the area before observing Gladney’s 2008 Nissan Armada overturn multiple times. The trooper then performed the HGN field sobriety test. Gladney displayed six out of six clues of impairment during the test. Gladney then gave a breath sample into the preliminary breath test showing a positive sample at .200. Gladney was then placed under arrest for DUI. He was read the Georgia Implied Consent Notice for Suspects Over Age 21 and agreed. Gladney was booked into the Chattooga County Jail charged with DUI and failure to maintain a single lane.

Hays State Prison Inmate Stabbed to Death

An inmate at Hays State Prison in Chattooga County, Georgia – who had been serving a sentence for molesting a 13 year old girl – was stabbed to death earlier this week. According to reports County Coroner Earle Rainwater confirmed that Jorge Renberto Ventura was stabbed in the neck and back in his cell at around 7:00pm Tuesday. The Department of Corrections reportedly confirmed to the Summerville News there is an active investigation into the stabbing death, but did not identify any suspects. Ventura was accused of molesting the child after meeting her on Facebook.

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry has secured a grant to place AED’s – Automated external defibrillators – in two county buildings.

AED’s are a device that automatically analyzes the heart rhythm and that’ if it detects a problem that may respond to an electrical shock’delivers a shock to restore a normal heart rhythm. Thanks to their small size and ease of use, AEDs have been installed in many settings (such as schools and airports), and serve a role in expanding the number of opportunities for life-saving defibrillation.

Chattooga 4-Hers Compete at Rock Eagle

Chattooga County 4-H traveled to Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, GA June 2-3 with 24 7th-12th graders to compete in District Project Achievement. These members have spent the last year researching areas of interest ranging from dairy cows to Beatles conspiracy theories, created a resume-like portfolio outlining their research, then presented an original presentation on their findings.

Jun. 8—The coroner in Chattooga County confirmed an inmate died at Hays State Prison on Saturday night and a homicide investigation is underway. Chattooga County Coroner Earle Rainwater said an inmate died on Saturday but could not confirm the inmate's identity because he wasn't sure if the next of kin had been contacted.
