An Agriculture Community Commemorates the Mule Train to DC

Posted by Gerald Tillman, Chief, National Agricultural Statistics Service, Survey Administration Branch in Research and Science. Last month, I had the honor to serve as keynote speaker for The Mule Train’s 54th anniversary. The Mule Train left Marks, Mississippi and traveled to Washington, D.C., on May 13, 1968, as part of Dr. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign to demand economic justice since Marks resided in the poorest U.S. county at the time. However, Dr. King did not witness the Mule Train because he was assassinated the month before the demonstration.

Police Investigate Tuesday Shooting

The Water Valley Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred in the area of Buena Vista and Daniels Drive Tuesday afternoon. Water Valley Police Chief Jason Mangrum reported a juvenile was struck in the leg, sustaining minor injuries. The victim was treated and released at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. The chief said there is a person of interest in the shooting.

Pace Receives Exchange Scholarship

Recent North Delta School graduate Lofton Pace was awarded the Exchange Club of Batesville scholarship for 2022. Pace, who will be attending Faulkner University in Montgomery, AL, was an honor graduate at NDS and involved in many civic and volunteer activities through the Boy Scouts of America where he earned Eagle Scout status. Presenting the scholarship check was Exchange Club president Jeremy Weldon.

Our little community was saddened to hear about the death of two of our residents, Kenneth Paul Williams, 60, and his son, Douglas Paul Williams, age 38. They were killed in a head-on collusion on Hwy. 51 near Hwy 7. Doug leaves his wife, Rebecca Williams; a daughter, Hannah Williams; and a son, Junior Williams. Doug also leaves his mother, Paula Williams, and a sister, Kimberly Williams.
