Casting for Recovery seeking applicants for 2022 retreat

POCATELLO — Are you or someone you know currently undergoing breast cancer treatment or are a breast cancer survivor? If so, Casting for Recovery invites you to apply for their Annual Eastern Idaho retreat, taking place from Sept. 9-11. Casting for Recovery is a national support and education program for breast cancer survivors. Casting for Recovery provides free three-day fly-fishing retreats to women impacted by breast cancer. Not only do the participants learn to fly-fish and the physical and emotional wellness it can provide, but the retreat also provides a forum to broaden the understanding of breast cancer treatment and enable sharing among participants. An all-female staff of medical and fly-fishing professionals guide you through the weekend held at the beautiful Living Waters Ranch in Challis.

Mosquito Flats to get 1,000 trout

The number of trout in Mosquito Flat Reservoir is pegged to increase by 1,000 in late May and early June. Idaho Department of Fish and Game personnel plan to stock 1,000 rainbow trout in the reservoir near Challis between May 30 and June 3. The trout are “catchable size,” Mike Demick with Fish and Game said, ranging between 10 and 12 inches long.

BLM officer rides the range on adopted horse

Amanda Schramm sometimes patrols public lands for her job as an officer with the Bureau of Land Management while riding a mustang she adopted and helped train. Schramm works in and around Salmon and Challis. She’s used Red, her horse, in her job for about a year after getting him from an inmate training program in Carson City, Nevada. Prison inmates in many Western states train wild horses that are rounded up by the BLM to keep herd sizes in check.

Custer County hosts event with opponents to Biden’s conservation plan

Custer County is hosting a day-long workshop Thursday with a national group at the center of opposing a Biden administration conservation initiative. American Stewards of Liberty is a Texas-based nonprofit that advocates for private property rights. Among other things, it trains local governments on how to assert themselves to federal agencies through the “coordination process,” a term in some major environmental laws that instructs the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to work with local entities.

Challis bridge rec site open again

The Challis bridge recreation site and boat launch on the Salmon River, about 2 miles south of the city, has reopened. The day-use site was closed in January because ice jams in the river caused flooding that damaged the road into the site, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

Morgan Eugene Williams

Morgan Eugene Williams 10/22/1951 - 4/2/2022 Morgan Eugene Williams passed away on April 2nd in Salmon Idaho. Morgan was born October 22nd, 1951 in Challis Idaho. He was raised on the home ranch in Stanley ID (Obsidian). When he was a teen, he spent his summers in the Sawtooth Mountains helping his dad build trails & he had one job in Nevada. Morgan loved wrestling in High School and did really well until a logging accident which resulted in a broken arm and a few other small injuries. Morgan loved riding his Mustang Nevada and hunting behind the Ranch. Morgan graduated in 1970 from Challis High School and soon after was drafted into the Navy, where he got to see a lot of the world. After being discharged he came home to help his dad run the ranch in Stanley and the ranch he was leasing in Challis. In later years he helped his dad run the sawmill on the ranch in Stanley.
