Chris Ilitch proved with one dynamite blast Wednesday that he gets how badly things have gone for the Tigers. He did not wait, as anticipated, for the regular-season’s end to axe Al Avila as Tigers general manager. He did not, as some imagined, push Avila to a senior office where Avila could cozily spend his final summers with a MLB team for which Avila has toiled 20 years.

Body found burned beyond recognition inside torched SUV on east side

DETROIT (FOX 2) - The scene an incredibly grisly one - a body found burned beyond recognition inside the rear of a vehicle on Detroit's east side. Very little is known about what happened, but crews got a 911 call before 2 a.m. Wednesday leading to the burning SUV, near Dubois and Hancock a block south of E. Warren Ave.

Tigers GM Al Avila fired after 7 years, no playoffs

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers’ disappointing season cost Al Avila his job. Avila was fired as Detroit’s general manager on Wednesday, ending a seven-year tenure without a playoff appearance. “I wish the results would have been better this season,” Avila said in a statement released by the team. “But know there is a lot to look forward to in the coming years.” Owner Chris Ilitch announced the move with his team mired in another disappointing season. Detroit entered Wednesday at 43-68, last in the AL Central.

Eastern Notes: McGruder, Lee, Bogans, Lewis, Celtics, Cavs

Barring a trade or injury, the Pistons will likely have to choose between Saben Lee or Rodney McGruder for their final roster spot, Keith Langlois of writes in his latest mailbag column. Making a trade, perhaps involving one of their big men, would create roster openings for both of those players.

Massive mural of Joe Louis takes shape in Downtown Detroit

DETROIT – The arena bearing his name is no more, but there’s a new tribute to sports icon Joe Louis taking shape going up not too far from the site of the old arena. You may remember the Joe Louis Arena parking garage, and now, right before you get to the tunnel, there’s a large mural of the legendary boxer.

Laurel County Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Arrest

Laurel County Sheriff John Root reports K-9 Deputy Brian France and K-9 “Maverick” arrested two people on drug charges during a traffic stop on I – 75. Deputies pulled over a car headed south about 6 miles south of London. During the traffic stop, deputies found that the driver, 22 year-old Tieyell Harris of Detroit Michigan, was wanted out of Ohio for drug trafficking. Deputy France deployed his K-9 “Maverick” who alerted for the presence of drugs. Deputies found over 10 ounces of Fentanyl and marijuana along with a Glock pistol. Both Harris and the passenger, 25-year-old Dimetri Shortie of Warren Michigan, were arrested. Both were lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center. The London office of the DEA along with the Laurel County Sheriff’s office will pursue prosecution in US District Court.
