Cowley College planning celebrations to mark 100 years

The Centennial Committee at Cowley College is putting together some special activities for the community, students, and alumni as they prepare to celebrate 100 years of classes being offered at its main campus in Arkansas City, KS. In honor of 100 years of service, Kansas Lieutenant Governor David Toland will be on hand for Proclamation Day at Cowley College on Wednesday, August 31, at 2 p.m. in the Brown Center. The event will include a preview of time capsule items, and the College will be celebrating the first day of classes that took place 100 years ago on Sept 12, 1922, with some special surprises for students.

Edward Timothy “Tim” Snider, 71, of Augusta, KS, formerly of Winfield, KS passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022. Memorial graveside service 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta, KS. Tim was born in Wichita, KS on July 31, 1951, to Lucille (Newport) Snider, of Augusta, KS and the late Merle Snider. He was a parts manager at Merle Snider Motors for many years. Tim is survived by: his mother; sister, Debbie Snider of Augusta; brother, Rick Snider and wife Lori of Winfield; sister, Tammy Wilson and husband Bryan of Augusta; nieces and nephews, Andrea (Shawn) Davis of Augusta, Christine Sims of Augusta, Abby (Jimi) Bryan of Augusta, Ryan (Amy) Kilby of Wichita, Travis (Shaina) Wilson of Augusta, Taylor Snider of Wichita, and Dylan Snider of Wichita; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Election: Winfield’s Roth Beats Incumbent In 79th; Trimmer Wins; Cowley Votes No

The next representative of the Kansas 79th Dist. in the state House of Representatives will be from Winfield. Preliminary results show that challenger Webster Roth defeated incumbent Cheryl Helmer, Mulvane, in the Republican primary Tuesday night. Unofficial final totals from Cowley and Sumner Counties show Roth with 2,210 votes to 1,875 for Helmer.

Minor Kitchen Fire In Winfield Prompts Fire Marshal To Offer Safety Tips

Winfield Fire Marshal Chad Mayberry has released information in regard to a kitchen fire this morning in Winfield:. At 8:10 a.m. on Monday morning, the Winfield Fire/EMS Department was dispatched to 720 E. 19th Ave. for a reported kitchen fire. Upon our arrival, the homeowner was outside of the residence, and we found a small fire in the kitchen above and around the kitchen stove. The fire was quickly extinguished, and damage was limited to items on top of and around the kitchen stove.

Red Riding Hood coming to the Burford Theater

The Missoula Children’s Theatre touring troupe is coming to Arkansas City this September to work with area youth on a production of RED RIDING HOOD! Cowley County youth in grades 1st through 12th are invited to join Red and her friends on a forest adventure with the Missoula Children’s Theatre. An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of RED RIDING HOOD on Tuesday, September 6 at the Burford Theatre at 118 S Summit in Ark City after school, beginning at 3:30pm. RED RIDING HOOD will be presented on Saturday, September 10th at the Burford Theatre.
