Sheryl “Sherri” Lee Wallace McClure, passed away shortly after being diagnosed with cancer on July 3, 2022 at her home in Beaufort, NC at the age of 60 with her husband by her side. Sherri was born in Washington, D.C. on October 22, 1961 at 10:22 p.m. and was raised in Alexandria, VA.

Possible severe weather may impact Ocracoke events July 2, 3 and 4

The National Weather Service reports that Tropical Storm Colin formed this morning along the central coast of South Carolina. TS Colin will move northeast along the N.C. coast today through Sunday, bringing with it a variety of impacts including locally heavy rainfall, potential for isolated tornadoes, and gusty winds, especially along the coast.

Hyde commissioners schedule special meeting, hearing

The Hyde County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 4, in the Hyde County Government Center, Multi-Use Room, Swan Quarter, and the Ocracoke Community Center. The public is welcome to attend in person and the meeting will also be live streamed via the County’s Facebook Live account.

Theater camp set for July, August

Ocracoke Alive will launch Playbox Theatre Camp, a summer theater program for kids and families weekly from July 6 to Aug. 18. Conducted by islander Emmet Temple, a theater artist and N.C. School of the Arts graduate, the sessions for students ages 8 and older will consist of an hour-long workshop on Wednesdays of each week.

Dredging complete, Ocracoke ferry routes back on full schedule

The North Carolina Ferry System said Ocracoke ferry routes can resume their full summer schedule just in time for the Independence Day holiday weekend. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently completed a two-week dredging operation in Bigfoot Slough, just outside of the Ocracoke-Silver Lake Terminal. Shoaling was occurring making it too shallow for the system’s largest ferries to safely navigate the channel. The Swan Quarter-Ocracoke and Cedar Island-Ocracoke ferry routes switched to their full schedules on Friday.
