Harvey Man Facing Felony Charges

On June 14, Marion County Sheriff’s Detectives met with the Ottumwa Police Department in regards to a handgun located in their jurisdiction. Officers went to the 100 block of Cinder Avenue, where they spoke with 50-year-old Shawn Duane Gerdom of Harvey. Gordon told officers he had purchased a Chevy Silverado in May and a handgun was a part of the transaction. The truck showed up as stolen from Keokuk County. After running a check on Gerdom, officers found he had a conviction for domestic abuse assault. Gerdom was charged with Dominion/Control of a Firearm or Weapon by a Domestic Abuse Offender, a Class D Felony.

Fire At First Church Of The Nazarene

A fire early Wednesday morning caused significant damage to an Ottumwa church. According to a press release, on Wednesday June 29, 2022 at 4:33 A.M., the Ottumwa Fire Department responded to a call of a building fire at 701 Ellis Ave, location of the First Church Of The Nazarene. All on duty firefighters responded with two fire engines; engine 2 located at Station 2 arrived four minutes after being dispatched and engine 3 from Central Station arrived six minutes after being dispatched.

Moravia Woman Dies in Crash

A single-car accident in Appanoose County claimed the life of a Moravia woman on Wednesday afternoon. According to officials, a 2018 Jeep Cherokee driven by 49-year-old Roberta Leffler was traveling north on Highway T61 around 1:00 PM when she lost control of the vehicle. The Jeep left the roadway and struck a bridge guard rail.

The Class 1A #7 Twin Cedars Softball Squad got back on track with an 11-0 win over Mount Ayr on Thursday night. The Sabers had run tallies in the 2nd and 3rd, and erupted for nine in the 4th inning. Ottumwa Man Arrested After High-Speed Pursuit

An Ottumwa man faces numerous charges after an alleged pursuit that reached 100 mph and resulted in multiple damaged law enforcement vehicles early Sunday morning. Visit Pella’s Dutch Christmas Market Receives Meet in Iowa Grant

In 2021, Visit Pella hosted the first annual Kerstmarkt, Dutch Christmas Market, and announced an expansion of the market with funding from the Meet in Iowa grant this summer. Lowell Olivier-Shaw, Chair of Kerstmarkt, said “With the extra funding from the Meet in Iowa program, we will be able to expand the market along the Molengracht Canal. We plan to purchase more vendor booths for people to sell handcrafted gifts and Dutch food. We would also like to add more entertainment and activities to create a friendly, inclusive Dutch Christmas Market reminiscent of a true Netherland market. We are thankful for the partnerships with the City of Pella, The Amsterdam, and Meet in Iowa.”

Ottumwa Police Investigating Tuesday Shooting

Local law enforcement are investigating a shooting that took place Tuesday afternoon on Ottumwa’s east side. According to a press release, on Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at around 4:24 p.m., officers responded to the area of East Main and Brick Row after a call stated that a male was bleeding from his head and neck. Police responded and located a male victim who was identified as 20 year old Jose Rosalio Hernandez of Ottumwa. Shortly after, at approximately 4:27 p.m., other officers with the police department responded to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center Emergency Room on a report that a male had come to the ER with a gunshot wound to his leg. This male was identified as 18 year old Anibar Timothy of Ottumwa.
