WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WCYB) — A Saltville man was killed in a crash which occurred in Washington County on June 24, according to Virginia State Police. Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 740 just north of Route 750 at 9:24 p.m. Police said a 1990 Ford F350 driven by 41-year-old Jason W. Blevins was going south on Route 740 when it ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the double yellow line, went off the left side of the road, hit an embankment and a tree, overturned and came to rest back in the road.

A southwestern Virginia man is now behind bars on a long list of charges after allegedly leading police on a chase. A roadblock was being conducted at the intersection of US 460 and Marrowbone Creek at around 11:00 PM Friday night. Officers checked on 26-year-old James Douglas Allen Adkins, of Vansant, who was said to be in a side-by-side. Officers allegedly smelled alcohol as they approached Adkins’ vehicle, who then drove away.

State troopers were conducting a roadblock at the intersection of U.S. 460 and Marrowbone Creek around 11 Friday night, when they went to check on James Douglas Allen Adkins, 26, of Vansant, who was driving a side-by-side. As the officers approached, they could detect a strong odor of alcohol, and then Adkins drove away.

Blevins, 41, of Saltville, Virginia was traveling south on Route 740 when his 1990 Ford F350 ran off the right side of the road. He overcorrected, crossed the double center line, ran off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and a tree, overturned and came to rest back in the roadway.

Washington County’s Board of Supervisors are still saying no to a roundabout connecting U.S Highway 11 to U.S. Highway 58 in Abingdon, Virginia. Suggestions for a roundabout at the busy junction near I-81’s Exit 19 have been suggested for years from Virginia Department of Transportation officials, but the plan has been soundly rejected more than once by the board. And yet another rejection came Tuesday night when the board adopted a resolution supporting upcoming road projects – minus the roundabout.

LEBANON, Va. – A new study of the likely next phase of the proposed Coalfields Expressway could help lower the project’s cost. Marty Halloway, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Bristol district engineer of mega projects, outlined that agency’s plans Thursday during a meeting of the Virginia Coalfields Expressway Authority board. The study will revisit a 16.5-mile segment proposed from Grundy to the West Virginia state line. Funds for the study come from a $1.99 million federal appropriation.
