Here’s a look at some local news brough to you by Silver City Radio. The Sheriffs of Grant, Catron and Sierra counties are using the Ready, Set, Go program to notify residents of evacuation status during wildfire season. The Ready, Set, Go (RSG) program helps residents be READY with preparedness understanding, be SET with situational awareness when fire threatens, and to GO, acting early when a wildfire starts. Ready status starts with maintaining an adequate defensible space around the home. Get Set status means creating a Wildfire Action Plan for home, family, and pets, including an Emergency Supply Kit for each person in the home and a Family Communication Plan with evacuation and contact information. Go status occurs when an active wildfire is in the area. This is time to load emergency supply kits and evacuation bags into your vehicle and park facing the road for a quick exit.

Spring in New Mexico, from March to June, can bring strong winds that can cause hazardous and unsafe conditions, especially around electricity. Never attempt to remove anything from powerlines, stay away from downed or sagging powerlines, and if a powerline falls across a car that you are in, stay in the car if possible. Call 911 and wait until first responders and PNM are on site to clear the scene. Any downed powerlines should be immediately reported by calling 888-DIAL-PNM.
