Sheriff saw Berenda coming

The once thriving village of Berenda was home to this showcase of education, Berenda School, seen here in the 1890s. When Fresno County Sheriff Leroy Dennis chose not to run for reelection in 1872, he decided to move to a little spot in the north end of the county where the Southern Pacific Railroad had just built a freight depot. Dennis was certain that a town would grow up around the depot, and he wanted to be there when the boom came. Little did he know that in 20 years, the little village he envisioned would one day be a major transportation link for the new county of Madera.

2 gang members arrested, accused of drug sales in Merced

MERCED, Calif. — Two known gang members have been arrested after police say they were selling meth from a motel room in Merced. Officers served a search warrant at the Merced Inn and Suites Motel and found Vanessa Hurtado, 40, and Joel Valencia, 31, with 200 grams of meth, packing supplies, and a 9 mm handgun.

Man found dead, drug dispute suspected in Atwater

ATWATER, Calif. — A man with several gunshot wounds was found dead near an Atwater high school, police say drugs might have been involved. The man’s death marked the fourth homicide of the year for the Atwater Police Department. They responded to the shooting Wednesday night at Buhach Colony High School.
